I mean we've all had this conversation a thousand times on the other side of the Irish sea. The EU really loving sucks as a neolib power enforcer and actively punishes any attempt at any of its members being slightly too socialist as well as completely locking them out of any internal governance. If any country was leaving in order to be more left, then great. However wouldn't you know it but none of the people discussing leaving have that plan.

Leaving a group, even a neo-liberal one is kinda against general leftist thought which is more focused on trying to build a collective effort towards a more equal society. Sucks that it plays into the status quo.

Irexit is a bad idea for the same reason that Brexit was a bad idea: the left will not have any say over the shape of a post-EU Ireland, not least because liberals hate socialists (or rather, Keynesian social democrats labelled as socialists) more than fascists.

Any shift leftward for an "Irexit" would be punished even more by the EU than Brexit already is, both due to the EU's core values and also fears of domino effects.

This reminds me about the idea of a Left Wing exit from the EU to bring about socialist ideas (was it called Lexit?) And how it was dumb.

It never really went into the practical realities of how you were going to bring about improvements. Let alone what improvements to people's lives that you were going to bring about that you couldn't while in the EU.
Like why can't you fix some of the existing problems facing society before trying to fix ones that are linked to membership of the EU?

For all it's faults, there were certain things that the Brexiteers wanted to bring about that they couldn't while in the EU.
Like removing workers rights.
Or getting out of the ECHR and the ECJ.
And bringing back the death penalty.
You know, all things they are working on.

I don't know, if you cound get like half a dozen competent politicians together you could probably arrange it so that michael higgins becomes king of the UK when the queen dies, in exchange for giving the government two cases of guinness and a packet of taytos.

Ireland has never once had a left wing government in the last 100 years. The Irish electorate has been quite clear, repeatedly, unfortunately on just having absolutely no interest in one. The EU has if anything been a force dragging our politics leftwards, much to the chagrin of FF and FG over the last few decades. Irexit removing EU protections on things like workers rights would just result in Ireland becoming America-lite - lower taxes for the wealthy, more privatisation, less government services. Leo's wet dream basically.

Not to mention the total disaster for our completely MNC dependent economic model that us no longer being in the common market would result in...

Its reassuring at least to see how little traction the idea ever got with the public here, even before the disaster that is Brexit began to unfold properly.

By very carefully defining "left-wing" and trying not to :barf:

Young greens are comrades but the rest of the party is shitlib centrist scum. Terfs isn't as much of a thing here that I've noticed.
