There's apparently some new thing that the subscription version of Podcast Addict supports that actually does some kind of push notification thing via the app when there's a new episode but it's also gotta be supported by the podcast as well.

pocket casts does push notification on all of them. the only downside is there can be a delay up to a half hour between new episodes and it pulling the info

I find the cross platform play and position syncing worth 99 cents a month but not everyone will need that

I think "leftists ranting about China" is probably one of my biggest political "triggers" (as in things that make me irrationally angry). There's something about claiming to be "on the left" and opposed to mainstream US politics while just gobbling down state department propaganda that is exceptionally disturbing. It's also just generally a massive red flag that someone's politics are terminally hosed up if they're an American constantly talking about the crimes of China/Russia/whatever.

I don't think it's a coincidence that this sort of person overlaps heavily with the sort of person who constantly talks about "the fash." I think the frequent naive earnestness of it is what gets to me; just complete rubes being manipulated into supporting the US government (either through throwing their support behind the Democratic Party, or through supporting US foreign policy).

I think Zizek has a lot of good opinions about why liberalism is bad and a lot of lovely opinions about why Marxism/Communism is good or even preferable. I don't obsessively listen to his interviews or anything so I'm probably full of poo poo but I have a hunch you'd be hard pressed to get him to admit he's anything other than an aesthetic communist.

It seems like his main psychological-philosophical thing is about transgressions and exceptions to the rules, so I don't think you'd be completely wrong to say he professes communism for the shock value. He's just got deeper reasoning about it than most people who are trying to be shocking.

zizek is a rarity in 2021, where he has clearly thought quite far about most of what he says, and is fundamentally pretty intellectually honest. which gives us the luxury of listening and considering without *really* needing to filter on how acceptable his position is overall.

this interview was a bit *too* lax, would have been interesting with some challenge here and there, but overall enjoyable and interesting.

yeah idk zizek is valuable fundamentally for being an intelligent and honest guy who's thought very hard about some things and who likes talking about them. even when i disagree i can usually see where he's coming from. sometimes, that is just enjoing a paradox or some particularly depraved insight into the state of things today.

it is worth noting that when he was the big bad communist philosopher the online discourse was not full of newly converted turbostalinists. he was already prominent in 2010, when the obama honeymoon was not fully over and saying stuff like "you cannot keep bombing countries and expect them to not get angry" which was incredibly radical at the time. it's worth noting that when he's talking about political systems he's usually talking about some kind of stable configuration of society; communism to him is a stable, democratic non-capitalist system. it's also worth noting that zizek is 1000% guaranteed to know more stuff about most of the things he talks about than you (or me). this doesn't mean that he's necessarily right, but there's a set of common errors that he's just not going to commit.

I was fairly incurious about China, "neutral" being the most charitable description, until these freaks stepped into overdrive over the past couple years. They've got me learning Mandarin and way more familiar with Chinese statistical yearbooks than I ever wanted to be over the course of just casually arguing with them. I legit have a new appreciation for China, Xi, and Chinese socialism that I never would have had if the propaganda wasn't so ubiquitous and just outright incompetent.

But laws are made by men, carried out by men, and men are imperfect. Virgil Texas is innocent. wow so weird that the capitalist world system got salty about someone telling it to suck eggs and executing some level of self determination. reminder that we had wanted to develop china post ww2 but instead had to settle for japan and the rest of the tiger economies instead. pissed off a lot of people. weak states you can ransack with merely the world bank and imf to financially cripple them and ensure total compliance to neoliberalism but bigger ones require a little more nuance and mao absolutely btfo'd that idea

There's two possible interpretations:

1) There's some behind the scenes legal poo poo going on and for some unknowable reason, Brie is forbidden from saying so much as "On the advice of my lawyer, I have no comment".

2) She's trying to wait it out and see if it blows over before trying to sneak him back in under the radar.

The longer things go on without a comment from her, the less likely #1 is.
