I don't think this is actually true except at beginner levels of play, some amount of travelling should always be more efficient than contract only play unless the setup is extremely bad for travelling.

Certain characters really lend themselves to not travelling and it makes it hard for everyone else if they decide to sit home. I'm going to say I've only played this myself on BGA but in half a dozen games there the non traveller always won.

Now im sure a good player could come along and beat us handily but after 6 games like that why would we bother playing it again to become good? There's a degenerate strategy which involves not interacting with half the game that's viable and that really turns me off a game when there are so many other games to play.

Marco Polo 2 does address this issue and just really highlights how poor Marco Polo was in terms of play testing.

My house rule for Brass is that whenever you build, sell or mention Wiggan you should say "don't stop, Wiggan, Wiggan" and it has massively improved an already perfect game.

What did you do for yours? I really like the felt topped sunken look that the fancy expensive ones have. If i can get a local to make one like that, that's probably the way to go.
I have a big old 1.5m square table, wonder if its easier just to get someone to build a felt top for it.

Also, this thread has been bad for my wallet. I started playing some Brass, Civ: New Dawn, and Spirit Island on Tabletop Simulator after reading people talking about them. Immediately went and got Brass, that game is a blast to play. Pretty confident SI is next.

unfortunately i don't have any pics of the construction process. i made it out of padauk with a maple core to the apron. the aprons were constructed out of three pieces, with a maple center, so i could add the metal strips for the magnetized channels inside and out (for cupholders and stuff). i used floating tenons to attach the legs and dominos to assemble the apron pieces. this was the first piece of furniture i ever built, but i had access to a pretty well equipped shop. i probably spent around $800-$900 for all the materials, which is way cheaper than any of the online game table makers. there are definitely a few mistakes here and there but i'm way happier with this than something from wyrmwood or any of the other table makers. it took me about six full days of work over about a month and a half to make it. i'd go with a local carpenter if you don't have access to a shop, but you can absolutely do this kind of thing yourself if you do some reading.

i went ahead and built a table instead of a topper because i wanted to make sure the height worked for people sitting at it (adding an extra few inches to the top of an existing table can make it hit too high and feel awkward), and i have a tight space i needed it to fit in. the only thing i need to adjust on it at this point is the neoprene insert because as the table has dried out, i cut my neoprene slightly small. so i have some of that plywood center peeking out.

i also have a space for a dedicated game table so i didn't need to make topper panels for it. that would definitely be doable but a little more difficult than the rest so it doesn't have inconsistent movement and cup/warp/look all wonky in a few months.

Please don't post pornography in the board game thread.

Vaguely related but I just watched a video about some good accessories for 18xx and the guy mentioned the Handy Vac tool to grab tiles and I need one badly but does anyone know what they're called or if there are generic versions of this? My options are limited in Canada unless I want to pay Amazon $20 and another ~$17 to ship it. Similarly painful finding a lot of crafting supplies and objects that I see referenced all the time on DIY board game blinging videos :(

I think the island map is the most different gameplay wise. I loved it, but my friend hated it because the squares are smaller than in the regular sheets and he likes to draw clean and neat pictures.

The volcano is very interesting. I was worried it would be destroying all my stuff, but it's easy to plan around that and use the volcano to your advantage with those line/row scoring cards.

The underground map is very cool, but it feels the least "flashy" of the 3. I feel like you could approximate it on one of the regular maps if you really wanted to, so maybe save it for last.

But if there's a pack with all 3 of them at some discount, then definitely pick them up.

I love Cartographer Heroes more than the original version. I think the new monsters with ongoing effects are a lot more interesting than the ruins cards in the original. I'm really hoping that Thunderworks will release some monster and hero promo packs in the future because they definitely could use a little more variety, just like the monsters in the original game.

If you're loving the original then think about picking up the new game when you feel that the game has gotten a little bit reparative, because the new explore, monster and hero cards really freshen things up.

Also for Cartographers fans, there's now an official random map generator, if you want more maps: https://www.cartographers.app/?map=3038507071

Does it work well when you put both decks together? My single gripe with the original is that the goal variety is kinda small. Would be nice if you could essentially double it.

If you like Cartographers, I'd recommend an older game called Take It Easy, a game Cartographers is actually a riff on. I'm terrible at both, but Take it Easy was quite popular at The Gathering and Gathering adjacent cons. You can get it at Funagain.

I don't think they are so different. As you say, balance vs. the "game" is a matter of taste, and modern games often come with levers to pull to affect that "balance." Balance among the player roles is just as important in cooperative games as it is in competitive ones.

Being degenerate is the point of Dominion, that's the whole game. Dominion is also a really fast game so picking a bad strategy doesn't really matter. Marco Polo is a much longer game and you've got to invest a lot more time into to get good at it. Time you could invest into a better game. Like Marco Polo 2.

I have not played it but I remember a kind of disappointing review that was summed up as "under all the bling, no matter what happens or what monsters appear for whatever reason, you're always just going to be doing the same thing: run up to them and hit them twice per round until they fall down."

I can believe it, because FFG seems bizzarely intent on learning all the wrong lessons and having all the wrong takeaways from digital-enabled boardgames.

I do own it and will roll it out someday, because there's not much resale value in selling my copy (another data point in favor of "they keep swinging and missing, what the hell? All they have to do is copy Mansions of Madness 2e and 90+% of their work would be done for them! What is their effing problem??!?!")

Seconding Keyflower.

Also if you can find a copy cheap - and I've seen CGE selling it for €10 - League of Six by Vladimir Suchy is a pro pickup. The meat of the game is Musical Chairs conducted in a series of bid-offs for the right to collect goods from one of six cities, with the twist that all payouts are immediate. So you can bid to lose in one city and use your pay-off to win in the city you really wanted. I got the base game for £5 in a clearance sale and it's the best VFM I've ever had from a game. There's also a cheap expansion (I got it for €6) that is well worth acquiring.

It's the unfortunately common reality of most Dudes In A Hall games - games tend to play out with the two sides just rushing each other to form a churning scrum of figures, that just wail at each other until one side crumbles. Sometimes they instead shoot at each other until one side crumbles. Imperial Assault (which has a lot of fans) is basically just this. The Conan game which came out to great hype a few years is apparently another offender.

I figure that DIAH is just hard to get right - too much going on and it's hard to make tactical choices attractive - why wouldn't you just run up to something and hit it? The DIAH games that work are Space Hulk, Gloomhaven, Claustrophia. Does anyone have any other examples of good tactical games?

I like both Cthulhu Death May Die and Bloodborne a lot. Both games can lead to lots of turns where there can be plenty of back and forth discussion over the best play or sequence of moves, lots of different ways to optimise things while still having very stream lined rule systems. They're by far my favourites in the genre apart from Gloomhaven, and have the edge in some cases cos they're a lot easier to just jump into (DMD particularly).

I really enjoy the new Descent. You ideally want all four players and in my group we all narrate our characters' lines in the cutscenes, which is hilariously dumb and fun.

I really like the card flipping mechanic. While it's true that the main activity is hitting stuff until it dies, there's a lot of juggling with resources and learning which enemies are weak to which attacks. The puzzle fights are interesting too. It's really important to know that in many missions you will die if all you do is hit stuff; you do have to pay attention to the objective or you'll get murdered.
