Congratulations to the New York City Football Club on winning the first MLS Cup for a New York-area club! Just imagine being an RBNY supporter. Congratulations are also in order for the New England Revolution and Club de Foot Montreal for winning trophies of their own. Those clubs, alongside Colorado and Seattle, make up the Major League Soccer representation for the Concacaf Champions League for 2022. Now comes the most MLS of offseasons, lasting only 75 days until the 2022 season kicks off. Enjoy it while you can! Offseason schedule December 12: Half-Day Trade Window Opens and Closes (9 a.m. ET - 1 p.m. ET) December 14: Expansion Draft December 15: End-of-Year Waivers and Free Agency Opens December 17: Re-Entry Process, Stage 1 December 23: Re-Entry Process, Stage 2 January 11: SuperDraft January 27-February 2: World Cup Qualifiers, including Canada vs. USA February 15-24: Concacaf Champions League begins February 26: MLS season begins

Said expansion draft is happening because Charlotte is joining the league, finally put us back at an even number of teams at 28. Their inclusion will also bump Nashville over to the Western conference (which was supposed to happen in 2020 but then 2020 happened instead) for an even 14/14 split. San Jose, NYRB, Nashville, LA Galaxy and Orlando are exempt from the draft as Austin selected players from those teams last year. Any club that gets one of its players selected gets $50K in GAM and presumably will be exempt from next year's draft for St. Louis. whypick1 fucked around with this message at 01:33 on Dec 12, 2021 |

Give us a chance to reply, sheesh. Never gonna be mad about hosting a cup final. Would all that beer waiting for me taste better out of a cup? Yes. Still hosted. I don’t get to attend another. We’re 0-2 in finals I’ve attended, I don’t get to go back. whypick1 posted:Imagine losing an MLS Cup at home and in penalties. Just imagine. Better or worse than losing in penalties at home to team that didn’t register a shot on goal?

I'm interested to see what Houston Dynamo does this offseason. New owner, new GM, soon to come new coach. I think there will be a decent amount of player turnover as well, they have already declined to re-sign Urruti, Quintero, Boniek, among others. Houston has really become one of the least exciting or interesting teams in the league over the last 5-6 years, I'm hoping this year will be a bit of a reset and begin a proper rebuild. They have 2-3 DP slots available, so there is no lack of options. I watched a good amount of MLS in general this past season, but it would be nice to actually want to watch my team again. Should be a really interesting winter for transfers in general in MLS, both incoming and outgoing. I hope the young south american trend continues.

LAFC also grabbed Franco Escobar from Atlanta, which means they're actually doing something about their defense. It'd be cool if both LA teams missed the playoffs again though.

Nashville must be aiming for a (relatively) big money domestic player with this, right? I hear that there's a prolific striker potentially now available up in Toronto...

I figure both Tajouri-Shradi and Blackmon would've been solid early pieces to build around. It's interesting though, I've been looking back through recent expansion drafts and it's really very rare that expansion draft players see significant playing time, maybe one player per year it seems like. I guess there's a reason why they were left unprotected but it was still surprising to look through the lists and see how few expansion draft players made any impact. Like Austin drafted five players last year, and only one (Jared Stroud) saw much time this year. Kind of makes me wonder why they do it at all

Portland's first expansion draft pick was Dax McCarty, who was immediately traded for Rodney Wallace.

But i suppose it won't happen that many more times. Charlotte basically used 1 of those picks to cover their GAM they sent to Nashville for the 2 intl slots, and pocketed some GAM for 2023. Roster building for a brand new team in MLS (or any team really) is such a bizarre process.

Sad to see Gaines go. I don't think he's gonna be great or anything but he was a good "hometown kid" story.
