My wife and I picked this up during the last steam sale and have been having a blast, except for having to dodge the hordes of Abominations that cover the swamp, wtf is up with that?

I had a weird technical question and wasn't sure if anyone else has dealt with though, after playing everyone on my left monitor switches to my right monitor in the same position, is there anyway to make that stop?

Question about Aboms:
Does it have to be a newly "unfogofwarred" swamp in order to have them?

I have sparingly been coming online the past week, and there is a 50% or so chance that my neighborhood troll has spawned on the edge of the swamp next to me, and he whacks at leeches. skellies and draugs willy nilly, but I have not seen a abom appear to take them on yet. Perhaps not attracted to noise made by faction enemies? Maybe they only populate newly discovered swamps?

Semi inebriated edit: Fcuk I hate coming online and forgetting to eat, just to be reminded to eat by the draug archers that one-shot me.

I went hunting in my pre-existing swamps and found one almost immediately. Do they come out only at night? Also unless you trigger their cool appearance animation I don’t think they’ll pop up for border fights by themselves.

They're kind of like golems in that they have a resting state, go through an awaken animation and then go into hit things mode.

BrianRx

I've seen them in their resting state with a green cloud above them, similar to blobs. And yeah, you can get in and do some damage before they're able to hit back. Once you have a bronze buckler, you can parry their attacks without taking too much damage or being knocked back too far. Until then, I just avoid them like I do the stone circles with drauger and skeleton spawners.

Hey sorry everyone--I was pretty Gung ho about getting a server together, then took town my PC in preparation for a move and am going to spend the next two weeks on the road visiting family, so I figured it would be a bad time to host a server since I'd struggle to admin it :/

This game makes server switching trivial as well, there's no harm in starting up in single player to get your feet under you, then switching to a server to play together.

WELP

Found my first abom. Went up into one of my swamp tree houses, began pelting it with arrows. It began to run away, and then promptly tripped into the sunken stairwell I mentioned earlier in the thread. Now every black forest thing that attacks it causes it to demolish yet more of the stairway.

It is quite stuck, and I do not want to kill it, because the loot would sink.

Yeah, just kill it if its being a problem.

If the loot doesn't sink too deep you might be able to still get at it. Build a tower you can climb directly over it and jump into the water from height. You can get a good 3-4m deep this way. Make sure there's room in your inventory and carry weight so you auto pickup the loot.

Killed the abom, the wood stuff floated but uncertain if it dropped anything that sunk. He had destroyed the stairs so I was treading water trying to get out for quite some time. Found a slight bump where I could stand and pickaxe a way out. The critter was actually useful while alive, as the black forest critters were continuously drawn to it instead of my base.

Yesterday evening was painful. My good gear on and a full inventory. Ran smack dab into a drug spawner. Figured I would just bash it and run. It spawned wayyyyy too many, and oh hey look at that a skeleton spawner literally right next to it. So many Graves.

Spent this AM gathering mats for an emergency set of portals. My plan is to sneak/run in and hop on a permalog, drop a bench and stairs up to a safe distance and snipe the nests, with the portal up with me.

Did I mention I had a full pack upon first death? Having anything in your inventory causes the grave to open your inventories and the grave inventory, in effect blinding you to everything you want to avoid. Good times

If you find a draugr spawned in the swamp then you’ve also found a skeleton spawner, or maybe two draugr and a skeleton or a draugr and two skeleton. They always come together.

Slowly worked my way back, and like you said it was actually TWO draug spawners with the skelly one. 1 star elites and a handful of 2 stars. Thank goodness for fire arrows.

Built a nice permatree cabin within reach of a crypt, and wife aggro willing I'll start that tonight.

Still fun, but the sunken crypt in comparison to the swamp above, seemed a bit... underwhelming. I feel the biggest challenge was transport of the scrap iron back to base, and trips back to repair my pick. It is actually a relief to be able to slowly go room to room at my own pace.

doesn't that make the swamps pretty much skippable? I always excavated around silver with a bronze pickaxe to make sure it wasn't a double silver vein, so if you can just undermine it and shatter it you don't even need iron from the swamps for the pickaxe to get silver

You still need iron for the final tier of armour and for some of the silver armour too IIRC.

You don't, but you need some other way to find silver. Either you use some kind of hammer groundpound method, you luck into a surface node, or you spend a lot of time digging up the mountainside.

And iirc both wolf armor and cape require chain so you need to go into the swamps anyway.

And you'll need iron for the plains armor too.

E: a dip for the fang spear would be useful if so many things in the swamp weren't extremely vulnerable to maces.

Second abom found. Lured it out to where another troll spawned, it killed the troll aaaaand retreated to the same well/stairway the last abom dove into. I have to think that it just looks for deep water to be idle in.

Shield chat.

Have been using a round bronze shield, and was getting used to the parry mechanic. With the epic loot mod (which is awesome) I have a collection of different resist ones and health/stamina ones. Fast forward to my first epic dropping: a wooden tower shield.

I was pretty excited up until the point I equipped it, movement slowed to a crawl, and no more shield parry. What is the upside of these again?

PittTheElder

:geno: Yes, it's like a lava lamp.

They have a huge amount of block armor, so if you are for some reason incapable of parrying (and hate yourself because you're so bad you can't parry) you can take a tower shield instead.

Is there a way to bring up a display of current skill levels?

Open the inventory, there's three or four icons in the top right above the crafting menu. One is current skills, another is current modifiers, one is the PVP toggle, and there might be another.

The one time we had some starred fulings spawn while a team of us on a private server were exploring and semi-starting to build a plains base the end result was "Screw this, wait until morning." Block all you want one of those jerks was tossing spears that you dodged or you died.

Kibayasu
Mar 28, 2010

Cheat to start building on the plains: Build stairways up and around one of those giant stone pillars and then break a jumping-sized hole in the staircase. No enemies can get over it and now you can build a sweet sky citadel mostly in peace.

I just got bronze and I need some good ideas for upgrading/rebuilding my meadows base. Right now it looks pretty terrible with my smelter and kiln just parked outside haphazardly next to my simple house. Are there any good videos or pics of bases this level? Most things I see are either starter huts or stone castles. I’m looking for something in between. Thanks!
