Endwalker feels like 130% of an expansion (which make sense, they said it was 30% longer). I would much rather that be squished into 1 expansion, then expanded out into two expansion and five content patches.

I mean, I could imagine the MSQ landing a bit better if they broke up each zone into a mini-patch, with a new one every two or three weeks.

It would be a bit experimental, though, so I can see why they didn't.

I can see where the idea comes from because there are points and places midway through that have the HOLY poo poo impact of what would otherwise be a patch climax... but I think that's a quality that makes Endwalker what it is. Stretching any part of it out would be to dilute that part, or to linger way too long on the dark parts to the overall detriment of the whole.

I do feel like Endwalker is two expansions squeezed together, and that’s not necessarily a detriment (in fact I really like Endwalker, even if I think Shadowbringers was the better story). But I can see how those two separate expansions would have worked out and I don’t hate them.

Expansion 1 (spoilers for the first half of Endwalker basically, up to level 85). The Garlemald Campaign, a more focused expansion about pushing our way into Garlemald and ending the tower threat. You’d start at Radz-at-Han and head north through Ilsabard, getting a zone in the Viera homeland and Bozja and so on until you reach Garlemald which goes pretty much the way it does in Endwalker.

Expansion 2 (spoilers for the rest of the story). Dealing with the actual End of Days, Sharlayan gets the main city focus here and you expand the Elpis and Labyrinthos stuff to more meaningfully be about finding a solution to the Endsinger. Lots of call backs, visiting new parts of old zones on our global quest for an answer which would also let you expand out the apocalypse weather stuff, but not necessarily aiming for misery porn.

For me, the power in Endwalker hasn't necessarily been (full game spoilers) the cosmic battle vs nihilism (though that is v. good), but it has instead been the little character moments. There is so much in this expansion but we've still had plenty of time to just sit with characters and just have moments. Seeing all my friends from the last 8 years reach the culmination of their personal arcs is incredibly powerful and inspiring.

The nihilism vs. humanism angle exists in service of the player and the characters, not the other way around. Which is why it works so well.

Not trying to be dismissive or argumentative (hope it didn't come across that way), generally curious in expanding this idea. It's a good thought exercise.

Yeah, I think it's easy to see how it could be split, but the problem is that you'd have to add in a lot of filler, especially in the patches between expansions. It's much better to just get this whole story in one go, imo. I hope the next expansion is more similar to HW and ShB, where it's more about traveling through a new location and really digging deep into it, but it was really fun to have one that was almost entirely crazy big concepts and callbacks.

I think for me the problem is Garlemald is dead. Zenos delivered the killshot when he dropped Varis, and Fandaniel helped build the tombstone. We've had two content patches, a trial series, and a whole area basically dealing with their shambling corpse of an empire and its warring remnants. I think at this point they made the right call in not having some grand final march, but instead us rolling up on a ruined city with a rotting fascism primal at its heart. edit: I just struggle to imagine what there really is left to say about the Garleans that they didn't.

It's not out of the question that they did discuss this, that there was enough material to spread through two expansions to bring things to their end... but also, FFXIV is getting long in the tooth. Maybe they wondered how much longer the game honestly could go at the subscriber level and engagement level that it was at, especially if they didn't follow up Shadowbringers with something just as powerful and and emotional. Maybe they made the choice to just jam it all together and go for the biggest drat finish possible while the fire was still there, either creatively on their end or engagement-wise from the player base.

To answer the question Probably either as the final trial of expansion 1, or the .3 patch trial. The former gives more time to build up towards the poo poo the end is coming stuff. Maybe the first blasphemy becomes the .3 trial, the latter would be more close to how the expansion stories normally work where .3 is the last of an expansion and .4 is the build up towards the next. You could also plausibly put it in .5 so that in universe you get the immediacy of the End of Days Endwalker gives. But the patches would cover rebuilding Garlemald and preparing for the oncoming End of Days, reaffirming allies and making sure we’re ready for whatever the true nature of the calamity is.

Honestly I think Endwalker is better than my idea, I just think the outline I gave is reasonable for an origin point for what Endwalker became, in terms of two expansions being turned into one bigger than average expansion.

Honestly, the biggest shame about not splitting this up over 2 expansion is - not having the "end" of the story happening at level 99.
