They didn't craft a logically consistent message that a normal person can follow and accept. They could have, but at the cost of making market number go down. Serving the rich is the GOP's prime directive so they had to pivot to downplaying the virus instead

Why are Biontech and Moderna not pumping out vaccines for the variants yet? It seems like there is some kind of legal framework to get these updates to the market quickly without extended trials (see the yearly flu vaccine), why are they not using it? I know Biontech plans to have something out by spring for omicron, but that will be more than a year since the original one. We definitely could have used one for Delta this fall, maybe even one for Beta during the summer.

With delta they didn't because a third dose of the normal vaccine is highly effective, so there was no need to disrupt everything by trying to switch over production to something new. For omicron they'll still need to test it in people to make sure it at least gives good neutralizing antibodies.

Only the outbreak is the whole world because people who use airlines in a pandemic are selfish wankers.

Lmao my older son just got re-quarantined today for a close contact he had last Thursday. He'd just returned from his previous close contact quarantine last Wednesday. His official "fully vaccinated" day was today, so just a few school days too late. This is loving stupid. I hope they keep kids remote for a week or two after Xmas Break to avoid this same post-Thanksgiving bullshit.

How much of that importance is chalked up to timing? E.g. the Israeli study was based on adults who had their second shot 5+ months prior, how does someone 1 month out from their second shot compare to a boosted individual 1 month afterward?

My town had a facebook group called "{Town} Uncensored" which like most groups like that was just angry right wingers. It was originally founded by a few right wingers who got mad that everyone would constantly just poo poo on their horribly wrong opinions in the main town group. I like to think I played a role in it because it was created shortly after one guy kept making threads where he'd post a bunch of a inaccurate stuff about a tax renewal(which if failed would close our hospital), I'd reply with a breakdown of why that was wrong, and he'd make a new thread hoping to duck it. I guess that's censorship. Well as you could guess this group like tripled in size since covid denial and anti-vaxx bullshit met with similar responses in the main group. Eventually the group got banned. I know I kept reporting various posts for false information, racism, hate speech, etc and I assume others did the same. I wonder if any of them jumped to some stupid local whatsapp group for right wing psychos. As a fun aside, they also had their own schism when an admin deleted a user's post for using the n-word. That other group was named "{Town} Uncensored Uncensored" and died or went private very quickly.

The Merck antiviral pill isn't looking so hot. It showed good efficacy against some earlier variants but low efficacy against delta, and given that the potential mutagenic side effects the FDA might decide it's not worth the risk https://twitter.com/EricTopol/status/1470466951470206978

Zugzwang posted:Trevor Bedford suggested the possibility that covid vaccines might need to be multivalent like flu vaccines in the event that we end up with multiple circulating variants that don’t provide enough cross-immunity to compete with each other. I guess we just need to hope that we can contain Delta/Omicron and future variants with a reasonable number of vaccine strains like we can with the flu. I assume there’s some highly conserved proteins that remain consistent across all variants of covid that could be used as ‘generic’ inclusion in vaccines. I guess the biggest issue with multivalent mRNA vaccines is the need for multiple production lines to produce the different mRNA components of the vaccine.

The early interim readout from the trial was much better than the final result but I don't think that had anything to do with delta. Merck statement from Nov 26: quote:KENILWORTH, N.J. & MIAMI--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Merck (NYSE: MRK), known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, and Ridgeback Biotherapeutics today provided an update on the MOVe-OUT study of molnupiravir (MK-4482, EIDD-2801), an investigational oral antiviral medicine for COVID-19. Data are now available from all enrolled participants (n=1433). In this study population, molnupiravir reduced the risk of hospitalization or death from 9.7% in the placebo group (68/699) to 6.8% (48/709) in the molnupiravir group, for an absolute risk reduction of 3.0% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.1, 5.9; nominal p-value=0.0218) and a relative risk reduction of 30% (relative risk 0.70; 95% CI: 0.49, 0.99). Nine deaths were reported in the placebo group, and one in the molnupiravir group. The adverse event profile for molnupiravir remained consistent with the profile reported at the planned interim analysis. E: can't find a source for the delta part but if it's just lovely overall then that's probably even worse, if it showed decent efficacy against alpha and beta it might've had a shot against omicron as well. 48% efficacy might not have made the cut though if MABs are still an option Snowglobe of Doom fucked around with this message at 05:47 on Dec 14, 2021 |
