I'd always heard Halo 3 was the best one but I played like 5 minutes of the intro and immediately dropped it because I was pretty burnt out having just played Halo 2. What's so great about it? Does it have rad set pieces like the walking fortress and highway vehicle fight from 2?

Yeah. 3 has probably the best set pieces of any of the games. The scarab fights in 3 beat the scarab fight in 2 by miles. It’s a bit slow to start though. Imo the third level (Tsavo Highway) is the first really good one.

It does have rad setpieces, including making the walking fortress a real fully functional vehicle so you can fight it in wide open areas where it has freedom to move and you have freedom to blow it up yourself in live gameplay rather than a cutscene. Generally it's a more solid and well-put-together campaign than Halo 2, and that was also the first title that let you play it co-op over the internet. I don't know if I'd call it an all-time classic but it should be a significant step up.

It also has an ending that's just about the polar opposite of Halo 2 (as in, it grants lengthy and fulfilling closure)

At one point during Halo 2, while playing co-op with a friend, I jokingly turned to him and said "and now the game ends" at the end of a fight. To my unhappy surprise, I turned out to be completely correct.

I remember this game. It was very not good as I recall but it did get me interested in mech combat so MechWarrior 2 became one of my next purchases and I loved it!

I can’t keep track of the numerous system shock reboots going on. Is this the nightdive one?

Erm, there's only the one. Yeah the Nightdive one.

Then there's System Shock 3 by Otherside Entertainment but that seems to be in some kind of bizarro limbo.

Nightdive is also remastering System Shock 2, which I'm sure far more people are excited about lol.

Edit: and another thing:

Looks like they have a publisher now. Figured they would publish it themselves like they've done everything else. I'm sure they blew through that 1.5 mil from the kickstarter already so they probably needed the cash to cross the finish line.

The Quake Christmas Jam for this year is out! It looks like one of the largest jams (by participation) in recent memory... 26 submissions. We have Ionous and Sock to thank for herding the necessary cats for this one.

If you're not familiar with the xmas jam schtick: uses Arcane Dimensions, and the playable space in each map has to fit inside a 1024 unit cube (the player is 48 units tall), so these are usually bite-sized maps with some quirky idea or else a map that REALLY uses and re-uses the available space. Oh, and often some Christmas thematic tie-in too. :-)

For this release the necessary Arcane Dimensions code and assets are included, so you don't need a separate installation of AD to play it.

Interesting quote from Night Dive regarding No-One Lives Forever in this PC Gamer article:

quote:

NOLF is somewhat unique in that multiple parties need to agree in order for this game to see the light of day. Recent mergers have actually made this situation somewhat easier. And Nightdive just won’t give up!

It's yet another day in the wasteland.

Aren't those available for download as genuine abandonware these days? As in, no-one is (or was) able to figure out who'd have a properly claim on it to demand it being taken down from the download sites, so they just slapped a bunch of modernisation and anti-DRM patches onto it and let it out into the world?

Quantum of Phallus

I definitely downloaded them very easily recently enough, I’m pretty sure they had no DRM whatsoever.

Sorry to be the turd in the punch bowl but the first game hasn't aged well at all. The stealth bits really put a damper on the whole thing.

NOLF2 is still excellent though, beginning to end. Ninja trailer park is possibly my favorite thing, ever.

ZogrimAteMyHamster
Dec 8, 2015

Yeah the first game's got its shortcomings regarding the stealth stuff, it's admittedly pretty slapdash in the same way that any attempts at "stealth" moments were the original Red Faction (e.g. some fucker sees you regardless of LoS because reasons, of course). To be honest I find that despite being far from perfect, the wonky stealth stuff is still somewhat part of the overall charm in NOLF's case... sort of. In RF however it was nothing short of infuriating.

All that aside, it'll be worth playing through the first NOLF at least once more, just to watch a fat man explode after eating dinner.

(I agree that NOLF2 is a much better game and just blows the original out of the loving water all the way though.)

In other news, no idea if this has already been mentioned before in the thread but fans of PSX Doom can now happily gently caress around with M+KB control, and (if they so desire) play the game at 60fps with a renderer that doesn't create massive holes in the floors/ceilings of large sectors:
https://github.com/BodbDearg/PsyDoom

Obviously you need your own copy of the PSX game to copy the necessary files into the directory and all that jazz, but hey, feels drat good to play the genuine article rather than a GZDoom mod and *not* have the framerate tank to 12fps on Perfect Hatred. It even supports the old co-op/deathmatch modes :buddy:
