Theres a case to be made that satire and deconstruction are a pretty bad way to disseminate a mass message, since there's quite a bit of evidence that big chunks of the population simply dont pick up on it, regardless of how blatant it is. See Starship Troopers, or Fight Club.

(Fight Club literally ends with the protagonist killing the fascist that lives in his head. Half the audience walked away just wanting to be Tyler Durden)

A lot of folks really do need messages to be as simple and straightforward as possible. While I think "show dont tell" absolutely makes for more compelling art, it also means any intended message often goes straight over the head of a bunch of the audience.

My very republican step dad loves The Boys and is completely oblivious to the blonde-haired metaphor of US Imperialism that wears an American flag as a cape while annihilating whole villages to kill a terrorist. Its wild.

With that in mind, explicitly political fiction is the loving worst. Give me metaphors and satire that I can enjoy along with my chud family that just likes it when the guy cuts dudes up with his laser eyes. Leave the monologuing Mary Sues to Heinlein and Rand

I remember someone in the libertarian thread posting about how they found a bunch of people talking about how In Time is a perfect metaphor for socialism and obviously what the filmmakers intended

i see this less as a need for the medium to be more blatant in its messaging and more that the education system, and western society in general, fails to teach people to be critical thinkers. theres no money to be had in it.

the only specific reaction i can find is Lord Bathurst's and he just played along with the joke; he had nine kids and in a letter to Swift he wrote that "four or five of them would be good for the table"

Wikipedia says the pamphlet had the intended effect of rousing the common folk against the nobs, though

I guess I meant more, did people think Johnathan Swift was endorsing baby eating and it convinced people the Irish should eat babies? Like, people thought Starship Troopers was pro-fascist, but thought that was a negative thing about the film, but with Fight Club a lot of people found the fascism depicted appealing.

Starship Troopers also had coed showers and big, fun guns, so it’s impossible to say if fascism is good or bad.

Literacy rates back then arent easy to say for sure, but probably in the 50s-60s, the audience wasnt really the same as a mass marketed movie.

I think there are a few layers to consider.

1) Maybe the audience is just too stupid to get it

2) Maybe the medium makes the message hard to convey

3) Maybe the creator hasn't crafted the message very well.

The first situation can happen but it is imho pretty rare. Look at Wolf of Wall Street, you get emotionally invested in the character and you get to wallow in the spectacle of him living the good life. But also, what does a virtuous hedge fund manager look like? Does he just not do dwarf tossing?

YES.

All this talk of going over people's heads ignores the fact that culture defines how people interpret EVERYTHING. People raised in a culture where getting rich has the cachet it does in the states could be hit in the loving face with a sledgehammer embossed with the words "JORDAN BELFORT IS A BAD GUY AND A WORLD THAT REWARDS PEOPLE LIKE HIM SHOULD NOT EXIST" and go home and be like "drat he had so much fun on that yacht (or whatever I haven't seen the movie)".

Satire isn't toothless if it preaches to the choir, either. Satire only reaches people who can connect with it culturally, see above. That's true of a lot more than satire. The real question is why does anybody think satire SHOULD be able to reach people who have been brainwashed from birth.

It's not a matter of going over heads, or in the inverse, preaching to the choir. All art communicates through the filter of the prejudices and culture of the person experiencing it. It's not a fault of the art if people interpret it as an endorsement of being a scumbag, it's the fact that a society's been built with that cultural hegemony that makes people more receptive to respecting a scumbag than not.

Sure, I agree. But then what makes the wolf of wallstreet special or different? If you could make a movie like that about any hedgefund manager why choose that one?

On the other hand, if you love venal wealth, why wouldn't you want to get in on an NFT style scam on the bottom floor with him?

Starship Troopers is a movie where they prance around in literal SS uniforms, have a fun time fighting an alien menace and then ultimately save the day and become heroes. If it was intended as satire, it's bad satire and I don't blame anyone for not picking up on it, unlike Fight Club.
