In the 3D printing for the tabletop thread, I mentioned how I was getting into Warmaster (10mm) scale stuff over the last few days, so thought I'd share a pic of my Forest Dragon not-Chaos "Despoilers" stuff I've printed and painted up (apologies for crappy camera phone pic):

I'm doing these guys up for Mantic's Kings of War at 10mm scale, but they're certainly suitable for Warmaster Revolution as well.

I printed a bunch of these dudes on an Elegoo Saturn, and the best thing about the minis from Forest Dragon is that they literally don't require any other supports or whatnot, so you can literally put them in your slicing software of choice, slice 'em, and print away. Really happy with how quickly I was able to get these guys together, and I'm working on a regiment of some not-Chaos Marauders from the same range.

I haven't played yet (waiting for the rulebooks to arrive in the mail), but from what I've read it's literally "divide all the measurements by half" for a game in 10mm, so you can play a typical battle in 10mm on a 3'x2' gaming surface, for example. And as one blog I read noted, you could play an absolutely massive battle in 10mm on a 6'x4' table. A lot of people have said good things about the current KoW ruleset, so looking forward to trying it out. :)

A Blood Bowl league is finally starting up locally and now I'm having a problem choosing a team.

I'm currently stuck between Amazons (because my made-to-order team just showed up) and Skaven, but I'm open to a different team. For many of the players in the league this will be their first real foray into Blood Bowl, so I'm one of the few that's actually experienced with the game. I figure Blodge on the Amazon blitzers might be a little brutal to deal with as a new player, but I've also done some exhibition games using my Skaven and the local players get pretty frustrated going against the normal skaven playstyle (don't actually bash, just zoning out areas with tackle zones, and then the Gutter Runners getting a ball and scoring within 2 turns).

What’s your league schedule looking like? Depending on how it’s set up for stuff like season length, matchups, and league composition, I’d say Amazons should be fine if you’re open to advising newer players, explaining why you’re doing what you do, and showing counter-skills.

Learning the utility of Tackle/ Strip Ball/random skills is a big part of the experience, and figuring out counter-strategies is part of what I find fun.

Got my first practice game in for my next league with my Chaos Renegades in. It was a loss by TD against Slann 0-2, but a moral victory on my end as my Ogre managed 3 casualties, a completed Throw Teammate, and MVP, which would be a chosen secondary, plus three of his players were MNG and injured, and his Krox was straight-up dead. Minotaur was a bit of a disappointment, but I figure I’ll need to learn how to better utilize him as a cage corner. Slann are weird as hell to play against.

Also loosely related, but probably starting up a patreon in the new year for fantasy football sideline figures in STL. I need to justify zBrush somehow, and I already do this for my teams anyway.

So far we've got 12 people and we're dividing into 2 divisions, games start on Jan 2nd and we're doing one planned matchup per week.

I'd be all over a BB fans patreon but we play at the local Warhammer store and using outside models is verboten. Though maybe I could plead the case that in this case it's actually terrain.

That’s a good schedule. Our league is just hitting 16 people now, one scheduled game every two weeks, with options for friendlies as well.

The terrain/tokens argument might work. Mostly doing non-sexualized cheerleaders, sideline staff like mascots, coaches, and refs, and other goofy things like that, because the market for teams is pretty flooded and I don’t think my aesthetic is super-distinct.

We got eight players in my local team. I lost my first match really badly (and ran out of time, so I just conceded. Then we did the post game sequence and I realized it was probably smarter to just lose normally) but my second match I got 4-1 over snotlings. My thrower has ten SPP now because he got MVP and five completions one of which was moving him to the front of the gutter I was planning to use, grabbing the ball, running 4 more squares away and throwing the ball for another completion I didn't need (I could have just moved forward and gotten the ball) And 3/4 gutters scored at least once, with one of them getting twice and a casualty so that was great. His strategy is a little tiresome, basically get the ball to the Stilty runna behind the troll, troll throws stilty max distance, he lands, then moves six and rushes twice for a one-turn touchdown and he has no strategy at all planned for me murdering his two stilty runnas. Everyone in in the league is all "we gotta kill the troll bro" and the troll ain't worth poo poo(actually, he's worth 16 SPPs now), the plan fails without his Stilty runnas. Really great second game, I'm hoping I can go against the delf player next round. Otherwise it's either Necro Horrors, Shambler Undead or Orcs, none of which I am overly interested.

Got my dungeon Bowl Boxes now, though. The delfs were a goddamn nightmare to assemble but everything else was a breeze. It seems like a "team" is just a sprue from two different team boxes, which means we could likely be seeing some different colleges in the future. Definitely gonna get a Lizardmen box next week since I already have imp nobles from the main BB set.

I still won't play with his, though.

quote:

A better analogy would be if someone walks into a championship tournament, says "GEE I THINK I MAY HAVE TRANSCENDED THE UNDERSTANDING OF SOME OF YOU GRANDMASTERS HERE, WANT TO JOIN MY NEW SCHOOL OF CHESS STRATEGY?", then loses by scholar's mate twice in the first round.

This person then refuses to leave his seat, claiming that he needs additional proof that the queen in f7 actually ontologically exists before he will admit defeat, and that the rules of the CHESS ESTABLISHMENT were unfairly biased against him by disallowing the possibility of his king being able to leapfrog pieces.

Then he pulls out an ancient shopping list from 1905 and claims that "1. Eggs" means 'The King', "2. Butter" means 'can', and "3. Milk" means 'leapfrog'. This is admissible evidence for his case because he has lived according to the dictates of this list since he was a teenager, and it has drastically improved his quality of life. When the referees tell him that this makes no loving sense, he drags them into a three hour debate over the precise meaning of the words 'makes', 'no', 'loving', and 'sense'.

When people point out that there is more than enough evidence to suggest his list is just a scrap of paper from some long-dead housewife's purse, he rather proudly points out how close-minded they are in dismissing outright the possibility that the list was in fact a secret coded message on the best way to live life, originally formulated by Atlanteans and passed down through the ages disguised as everyday documents. After all, if one starts with the presupposition that such a document exists, then it would be very fair to argue that it is indeed in the form of his shopping list.

Never mind that his previous interpretations of the list led to three convictions and time served for robbery, hate crimes, and murder. These were just unfortunate misinterpretations on his part of the list's true intentions, he says. The list itself is blameless. In fact, the Atlanteans deliberately obfuscated the true meaning of the list in this way, so that it would require multiple failed misinterpretations before one would happen across its TRUE meaning, and in doing so appreciate it all the more.

In fact, he does have some evidence to back up his claims. Why, just last week during his daily meditation on the list, he felt it telling him that something good was about to happen in his future. And yesterday, wouldn't you know it, he found a twenty dollar note on the sidewalk! Evidence of the list's prophetic powers if I ever saw one. And believe him, he has many more stories where that came from.

By now, the debate has splintered off into innumerable tangents, with the one man against literally every other player and referee present at the tournament. Finally, he graciously accepts the possibility of defeat in some of the myriad topics now being covered. OK, maybe the tallest player doesn't always get to go first. Fine, I will concede that there isn't much evidence to support my third-invisible-knight hypothesis. But that's all irrelevant. What he wants to concentrate on, and what nobody has yet been able to disprove, he adds, is the ability of the king to leapfrog over other pieces.

The argument drags on for weeks. Finally, one afternoon, the beet-faced referee exhausts his last reserves of decency and throws his arms up in frustration and despair. "YOU loving RETARD, HOW CAN YOU LAY CLAIM TO KNOWING ANYTHING ABOUT CHESS STRATEGY WHEN YOU DON'T EVEN GRASP THE MOST BASIC RULES!?" He shouts, just as a new entrant walks through the door. "I'm sorry," replies the man calmly, "I simply cannot discuss the rules of chess with such an 'official' if you insist on using such strong and uncouth language. Please retract your insults or I will be forced to plug my ears whenever you say anything from now on."

Seeing only this last exchange, the new entrant pipes up. "He's right, you know. If he did something wrong, then you as the referee have every right to tell him he is so, but it should be done with a patient and thorough explanation of the details of his error. Hurling ridicule at him solves nothing and won't change anyone's mind."

The lazy eye of the retarded List-following, King-leapfrogging man twitches almost unnoticeably, as he cranes his head towards the source of this new voice. A welcoming smile cracks, inch by beaming inch, across his face. He licks his lips. He clears his throat.

"So glad to know decent people like you still value a polite discussion. Care for a game?"

OKay.

So, first, for those of you who like me had never seen this before, apparently that whole quote is an ancient and venerable Somethingawful.com Forums Legendary Post or something. It's been cropping up for years. Here is a recent example in the PYF Funny Forums Quotes thread. I didn't know how to handle this so I asked for advice in the mod forum.

The consensus among admins and mods polled, is that mllaneza shouldn't be blamed for the ableist slurs in that quote. I agree with that, to the extent that it appears to be an innocent re-quotation that is in-context for the topic in the thread, although I don't fully agree.

That said, I disagree with the majority of the mods and admins that this quote is "funny" and therefore "passes the 'it's OK if it's funny'" test. Maybe my sense of humor is miscalibrated in this instance, but also perhaps I differ from my mod friends in where I draw the line for good jokes permitting transgressive language.

I don't want to hit anyone with a probe for doing something that they genuinely thought was harmless. Discussion is almost always better in these cases.
I don't want to admonish someone for making jokes, even if their jokes didn't land with me.
I want to protect this thread, and this subforum, from harmful content. My gut tells me that repeating an ableist slur, even in the context of a blockquote, is part of a culture of normalization of those slurs, and that the only way to excise ableist slurs from the common discourse is to push back against that normalization. So simply dismissing the report and moving on was not acceptable to me either.
I don't want to derail this thread with a lengthy debate about it, either. I don't want to make a bigger deal out of this post than it really is.

So I'm just posting to be completely honest here. I've been a moderator for a year and change now, which feels like a long time, but is also nowhere near long enough (especially for a low-report forum like TG) for me to feel confident in handling every report. I simply do not feel confident I'm handling this one well. Ultimately I decided that making a post and honestly expressing my struggle with it was the best option. So here it is. If you disagree strongly with this, you can PM me, or PM an admin, or I guess open a QCS thread, or something. A little discussion here is OK but please keep it short so this doesn't turn into a thread debating the standards of quoting venerable SA memes in 2021 at length.

And mllaneza, I want to reiterate that irrespective of the rest of their opinions on the matter, basically everyone I just talked to in the mod forum agreed that you didn't deserve "punishment" for making that post, so please take that to heart. I, personally, didn't like it. It looks like two or three posters here found it eyebrow-raising too. Maybe Trad Games is different enough in culture from the rest of the site that this is just the only place it's not cool to post it or something. I hope that's not the case. There's a hundred moderators and I only got feedback from a small handful. I don't know. Just... yeah, that's all I got.

Just a thought, but White Scars are hit and run / lightning assault. A walking battleship really doesn't fit the bill, TBH. However, if you're looking for fluff justifications:

Warp Runners - Slow and steady. Doesn't really jibe with White Scars. Blue and yellow, however, kicks rear end.
Firebrand - Fiercely independent and not well trusted around the Heresy. Nice color scheme. Not a lot of detail for them, so they could slot in.
War Griffon - Vanilla titan legion. Doesn't really fit the White Scars theme.
Fire Wasps - Fiercely loyal to Mars. Doesn't really fit the theme either.
Imperial Hunters - Specialized in fast attack and extensively used warhound scouting/hunting packs. Good fit, IMO. My only gripe with them is that they're one of my least favorite color schemes.
