OK, that might make you happy, but for him, the guy who built and owns the car, sounds like keeping it aircooled would make it significantly worse for him. Seems he's got a good chassis and drivetrain for recovering broken off road rigs, in a body that has a style he likes. Why would he make his car worse just to keep some chucklefuck on the internet happy?

I don't know, which is why we're having this conversation.

Memento posted:

you know you're absolutely right, turning a Corvair into an offroad recovery vehicle is dumb as poo poo, it's up there with doing something like looking for a 1981 AMC Eagle SX/4 because you think it would make a very interesting land-speed racing car

Look, I'm super happy you've taken the time to deep dive just to come out with the hottest of hot takes, but yes, by the rules governing land speed racing that is a very good choice of car for a specific class.

At least do thorough homework if you're gonna come at someone. Fuckin' amateur hour here.

Cool, fine, you still understand which thread you're in, right? And how someone can find something cool about something different and that making GBS threads on it is very much the antithesis of the thread? Stop being a loving killjoy.

Also, I flat out don't believe you about the AMC. He who asserts must prove.

Also also, "I don't know, which is why we're having this conversation" This is a conversation that you started by dredging up a months-old post about something some people found cool. Do you really have nothing better to do with your time?

Not everything has to be Binky, which is honestly one of the dumbest/coolest, over-the-top builds on the planet, and once they're finished will be discarded for something else, because the building is the thing to those guys.

I was wholly unaware of him. I found his youtube channel and he's doing a thing with an old Jag involving questionable electrical systems so I'd say he's on theme.

However! He also has this video:

and this one!

And now the proof, kinda. If you've watched at least some of the two previous awesome car videos then welcome to the wonderful world of land speed racing. El Mirage is a dry lake outside of Barstow, CA. Head on over to https://scta-bni.org/ for more information.

Now one of the things to consider about land speed racing that was brought up in the first video is that there are a lot of classes and those classes are broken down by chassis and engine. Looking at a list of records you'll see codes like XXF/BFS which is a special construction streamliner powered by a flathead V8 with aftermarket OHV heads on fuel with a supercharger. It's a mouthful. Classes get rather granular.

So to the AMC. The first video features Speed Week out at Bonneville Salt Flats. There's several miles of distance to try to set a record, but the second video is mostly about El Mirage where you only have one and a third miles to accelerate so traction becomes more of an issue.

If you dive into the rules a car can only use 4wd/awd if it was originally equipped with it. And a "classic" vehicle is a vehicle produced between 1928 and 1981. The smallest, most aerodynamic vehicle produced with factory 4wd between 1928 and 1981 is... the 1981 AMC Eagle SX/4 coupe. Also it has a relatively large engine bay. You could run any number of large displacement engines in it and have the benefit of traction from 4wd which would allow you to set records at El Mirage. It would likely be run as a "classic blown gas coupe" or /CBGC, but it you got frisky and put a step pan (or belly pan) on it, or changed the bodywork ahead of the cowl it would be a /CBGALT or /CBGCC. There's also some nitpicky details about engine electronics for the class that is beyond the scope of this post but hey, check out the rule book.

Land speed racing isn't widely known about but the people involved are very passionate about it. If you ever have the chance to go to one of the meets I highly recommend it. Check out any other videos you can find about El Mirage, Bonneville, SCTA or land speed racing in general.

I know I've said this before, but if you ever have the chance to witness a Monster Truck Rally, TAKE IT. It's some of the most fun I've ever had seated in an arena. The entire 'sport' is designed for 10-year-old boys and their Dads, but it's a riot. Non-stop entertainment.

Every time I see one I'm reminded just how much I like the plain old VE SS front and rear bumpers, and by extension how simple the V8 Supercar was. If I was ever to do a Commodore build, it would start there and include Supercar influences. Imagine a Commodore GT3 or something. Would definitely have centre lock Supercar wheels too. Maybe with the new Z06 motor? Make the front splitter a seperate exposed carbon part, big honking carbon diffuser up the back cut into the SS rear bumper. French cut an LED rear rain light into the boot lid as a 3rd brake light. Either no rear wing or a big gently caress off one, maybe newer swan neck style. Side pipes for sure.
