Re: Mensa. I made it into Mensa. Largely because of Molly Meldrum. I wasn't going to let that dumbarse be quantitatively smarter than me! I went to one meeting, and it was full of boring middle aged men in suits talking about their companies email servers. The best thing was the laminated card I got from passing their stupid test was laminated off centre. I used to theatrically bring it out in the pub to the jeers of my friends to prove how much more cleverosity than them I possessed. Alas, I lost the card a couple of years ago, and can't be arsed to re-test/pay for another one.

My sister once moved to a real remote city in Norway and was struggling to meet people, so she signed up for the local Mensa chapter. She very quickly came to the conclusion that having no friends is better than hanging out with Mensa people.

It's very strange. What is the outrage here? How is it erasing women to ask if you're trans or not? Imagine if she posted a picture of the question on the census where it asks what race you are, and she writes in "Woman" and then it gets that same response. That is how confused I am. It's also weird considering that they hate when statistics group trans women with cis women. Seems like you'd need to ask someone if they're trans in order to distinguish between the two groups.

They hate the word "cisgender" because they want it to be "normal" and "weirdo" instead of "cis" and "trans" The acknowledgement that they are just a different category rather than the only legitimate one makes them angry. The difference, I think, between that and straight/gay is that gay for a long time was a pejorative and trans is not, also cis is not a word they have built an identity around the way people did with "straight" For people who get so pissy about identity politics they really are very fragile when it comes to what words they will accept being used to describe them.

I feel like I remember them being prickly over "heterosexual" rather than "straight" because it is a word constructed in the same way as "homosexual" and therefore puts the two sexualities on a similar footing. Which they can't abide. Very "I don't use pronouns!!! I am normal!!!" energy
