Yeah, it's almost a completely different game with that mod.

Being the tip of a cavalry charge into an enemy flank is something this game really delivers on, though. Couching a sword lance for 500 damage at full speed is also fun.

Yeah, too bad cavalry charges are largely garbage and one person can effortlessly absorb the weight of a horse and rider at full speed crashing into them.

Arcadey as it is, this is actually one of the things the game gets vaguely right. You absolutely do not want your cavalry getting stuck into a dense ball of heavy infantry, and trying to charge one is a great way to get unhorsed and die.

OK, but your cavalry can't even charge through a single-file line of light infantry. Charges do nothing to anyone. You just stop completely dead as soon as you hit a person and deal like 7 damage.

I've been playing the beta but it looks like the thing that creates formations at the beginning of battles is hosed. I select "cavalry", "infantry", and "archer" when making my units, put the slider to max, and it just makes a mixed pile of troops? Anyone else have this issue?

Your best bet is probably the dev update videos Taleworlds has been putting out every few months.

Do player perks that give benefits to formations have any benefit now if you're the party leader? Or only if you assign yourself to a formation as part of a larger army?

Seems like you can pick any hero to lead any formation, including yourself

EricBauman posted:

There's something I've been wondering about archers in this game.

I assume they aim for individual soldiers. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to hit anyone in a formation that's very spread out (like cavalry that's all going after individual soldiers after first clashing with infantry). But how do the archers choose their targets? What do they prioritise?

I think they shoot at the closest enemy they can see, hence why ducking behind a tree in hideout missions makes them forget about you and target an ally

Shear Modulus

Yeah the "Captain" perks require the hero to be assigned as the hero leading the formation. Prior to this update I think formations only got captains when that side was an army, then leaders of the parties in the army would get assigned to each of the formations (meaning all the captain perks didn't do anything when you weren't in an army battle). The latest update lets you assign captains to the formations even if you're not in an army. So I guess now it makes sense to have one guy focus on the best shield infantry captain perks, one guy all the best foot archer ones, etc.

I've never been able to assign captains even in an army. It's always locked. Is that something unlocked by a perk?

I forget if it let you assign captains when you're leading the army (now that you mention it I think I remember some screen saying something like "you're in charge of the army and can control all troops personally") but I've definitely seen a captain assignment screen and had my character be assigned captain of archers or something when I was in an army led by an NPC.

Yeah this was how it used to work. As a consequence you barely got to use any of the skills that buffed your formation because you were barely ever IN a formation. The party leader isn't in one.

I just jumped back in and this is pretty minor, but they added an icon next to each village name on the campaign map that says what they produce. I really like it when I'm trying to do trade or figure out where to put shops, etc. There's probably a good bit more I'm forgetting, but they've made many small QoL improvements.

Yeah, that icon is a life-saver. The other big one is that elite troops can be hired from way more villages.
Smithing is still weird, but much less weird than it used to be. And in the current beta, parties have a colour-coded speed rating...
I started a new campaign and bought a crappy cheap 2hander axe and... it seems to hit multiple people at once? Has that always been a thing? It's a very welcome change if so.

Tanks still suck but you don't gotta hand it to the Axis either.
Yea 2-handed axes have cleavagery, and I think Its been from the get-go. Its abt the only thing going for them since swords and polearms are better at about everything.

sort of agree... very rare to find an enemy fresh from a wipe with his stack half level 1 recruits. only see that now after a mega battle wipe, enemies rebuild armies into veteran stacks easily now (same with the player, but it's a little too much imo)

Someone a while back mentioned how to split the archers up into two lines so you can have them protect a block of infantry. How does one split a group again?

Also on a side note, calvary should be much more powerful than they are currently. Calvary charges do damage, but it honestly should be more.

They're at like a third or more of all villages, instead of one or two villages per kingdom.

Any tips for the later early game? I've completed the initial quest to get $2k, 20 troops, rep, etc and have rescued my niece and nephew but not sure where to go from here. All the crazy end game stuff people talk about I'm pretty far from. I've tried to talk to some nobles but can't get the other quest to get going. My party is limited to 20 but most of them are like T3 or so and I have a couple decent companions. The normal looter/bandit groups I can take pretty easily. My PC's skills are pretty pathetic as they seem to raise pretty slowly but I was going for a horse archer with backup polearms. For money making I don't have any crafting so I've just been taking caravan escorts while chasing down all the looters/bandits I can and taking them prisoner to sell. I'm sitting on about $5k and at the pace I'm going it's gonna be a long while before I can even afford armor.

edit: also any recommended QoL/tweak modes that work with the current version? I think it's 1.6.5 but most mods seem to be for much older versions or the 1.7 beta.

You're at probably the most painful portion of the game, where you're not quite strong enough to do a lot of stuff but not quite weak enough to have nothing to lose. My recommendation is to ride around the map doing quests and raising your rep with villages and cities, then pledge yourself as a mercenary to whatever kingdom you like best.

Keep an eye peeled for bandit camps; you'll often be able to get a village and a city offering quests to whack the one camp, which becomes a quick way to earn $3000.

There is usually a pretty good trade route from seonon to marunath to ortysia to quyaz to askar. There's usually a lot of options along the way like tools in seonon to the desert cities and horses from askar to the northern cities.

Also don't max level your troops, it gets too expensive to maintain them. Tier 3 is usually enough

FuzzySlippers
Feb 6, 2009

The quest rewards are all over the place. It's kind of a pain in the rear end to do some of them for little reward but yeah those camp clear ones are good money.

Rather than trade on my horse archer I decided to try it out on a new infantry focused character in the 1.7 beta. I also picked up smithing and the money is just rolling in. When there's an order I can actually complete those payout nicely but just traveling around buying up raw resources cheap and mass producing weapons makes a lot of money too. New part recipes come in super slow though. Throwing axe orders are common but I still don't have a single part unlocked for them.

Haven’t played in a few patches so idk if they nerfed it but you can/could power level smithing and get loads of recipes by crafting the most difficult thing you have the parts for, the further above your competence level the better. You’ll get poo poo rolls but get like 10+ levels of smithing and 3+ recipes per craft
