The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.

This morning an actual seemingly out of control red light runner, and later on a bonus group bullying of a semi trailer. Luckily he was able to just lay on his horn and force his way across two lanes of heavy traffic to not miss his exit, being spitefully occupied by those bastard cars driving in his way :argh:

I've been seeing way more people just flip a bitch wherever they like and try to turn from active lanes of traffic across other active lanes at places where that's completely illegal. Like, I've been driving for nearly 25 years and it's never been this bad. It's like no one has any impulse control anymore.

If it wouldn't be a crippling expense and massive drain on the system to most people I'd mandate everyone have to take a road test again at their next license renewal. I think COVID has gone HAM on people's squash and melted the part that prevented people from doing extremely stupid poo poo.

Big same :( Did a year of quarantine cause us to skip over a generation of driving exams or something? And now there's an entire crop of kids with even less driving instruction than the paltry amount they usually get in the US?

My gently caress You Learn to DriveTM fantasy is to make everyone drive a stick for their first year. At least its harder to dick around on a phone that way.

This is from the $30 70mai cam I posted above earlier. Even downscaled it's visibly not great in terms of IQ but definitely good enough for the purpose. As I suspected, driving just 50km today was sufficient to collect some material!

1st clip is something I complained about but what doesn't seem to be a common issue elsewhere. Some impatient morons try to overtake a car that's merging in front of them, thus making it dangerous for them to complete the merge and potentially endangering the cars already on the road. As we can see in the second clip later today.

https://i.imgur.com/lvghCgx.mp4

The last one is bonus material, I was stuck behind the truck and had to wait until the BMW flew by before taking the exit, when that guy had to make sure he didn't miss his exit.

I don't see anything wrong with the first clip - as long as you're checking that the lanes are clear (I.e., don't do what someone almost did in the second clip) and you give it the beans, that's a perfect valid move.

I see much more of an issue with people merging below the speed of traffic, aka the van/car in front of the black car in the second clip.

First guy drives right over a solid line. People merging way below the speed of traffic is a huge problem, but that guy is still an rear end in a top hat.

Oh no, not a solid line!

I'm all for obedience to lane markings when they matter. The line exists to encourage people to speed up before merging into traffic. There was no traffic (and again, I'm basing my ok-ness with this on the idea that the driver actually looked and validated this, which ... we'll never know), and they sped up. Sounds like they did the needful.

Not to pass or change lanes though, unless there's some difference between Canada and wherever you/the OP lives.

And yeah here the consequences are nil, but it's still a pointlessly aggressive manoeuvre that could have been executed better all of three seconds later. It's the lack of any patience that's galling.

Rules of the road are important because it makes trajectories predictable, which is important for safety

Based on the traffic sign for Plzen imma guess that OP was driving in Czechia :v: So US rules don't apply.
Here in Denmark crossing those solid lines would be illegal, and yellow lines are only used for temporary road markings (during construction etc.), in which case they supersede white lines. With all the standardization going on in the EU would expect it to be similar there.

mobby_6kl

Yeah you're not supposed to cross the solid white line here. The first clip is obviously not the end of the world, it was just a clear example of what I meant. But I'm definitely not a fan and not because of the magic white line (I cross it too in the last clip :v:), it just creates a more dangerous situation for no good reason:
  • The car darting across two lanes has a higher chance of cutting someone off (like the black bmw was about to do in the second clip)
  • They're likely to start passing the slow(er) merger when they already started to merge
  • The slow merger now has to check if the passing car cleared them completely and it could be difficult to tell at a glance if the other car is still in their lane partially
  • While this is happening, they can run out of merge lane, or rear-end the car in front of them (like the red van) if it had to slow down for some reason
So in conclusion, slow mergers are annoying but this isn't helping it

I-10 E yesterday felt like I was in another country since everyone on the road practiced correct lane discipline. Then I got on I-75 S, and was transported back into hell.

Here's a textbook example of why you have to keep your head on a swivel when driving in Florida. The white-haired Lexus driver has become a rolling roadblock since they've parked themselves in the left lane at 10 MPH under the pace of the left lane. The Kia Soul driver can only see exactly 1 car in front of them, and cannot see the semi clearly indicating that they want to merge left.

I leave audio on but say "I do not consent to being recorded" every five minutes while I drive, so that the audio won't be admissable

Anyway so we got a fancy new(ish) car, a VW Tiguan SEL and it has a backup camera that is pretty great. If I buy a dashcam, is there one that can tie into the stock rear cam? Or is it pretty much necessary to install a second rear camera to continuously record video?

If the rear cam doesn’t communicate via canbus you can split and duplicate the wiring to the head unit and the recorders, if it does talk via canbus you are better off adding a second one.
