This. I'm 6'5" and an enormus pile, so crossing oceans needs to happen in a premium cabin for my comfort and that of those around me. I'll do Y+ on day flights, but not where I'm expected to actually get some sleep. This is also why the day flights to Europe are the best.

I am about to fly trans Atlantic on Air France premium economy, which from what I read sounds like a downgrade from SAS premium economy that we originally booked. I miss being able to do business across the pond, esp from the west coast. 13 hours in an economy seat gets old quick

She’s smaller than average and if I recall right was either too blasted or too drugged to remember much of the flight.

It was an A340 and was much better than the economy seats. I'm sure it wasn't as nice as business, though. No idea what it's like now, however. I fly by myself to visit my parents and sometimes a Delta First class domestic isn't that much more than Economy+ so I splurge. However they don't do meals since Covid unless it's like NY-LA so the value has been reduced.

I did UK to New Zealand in steerage class. 27 hours door-to-door. The only ones that get to beat that for regular discomfort are probably in the military.

And their seats do this stupid thing if you recline where it actually just moves the bottom part of the seat out so you just slouch instead, they’re terrible. I always went with Delta if schedules allowed, the planes were newer too.

I would do business upgrades a lot when single, now that we’re two people that’s a bit harder to swing, but the upgrade from SAS Y+ to lie flat business was like $100 on the way back so we’re doing that for sure

The C-5 has a decently-large passenger cabin but the climb up to it is pretty  and the seats point towards the tail.You're also behind the CG so it can be a little bumpy. There are also precious few windows.

Heh, I checked the Malta airport codes in case it was some kind of airplane nerd joke, but couldn't figure it out. Like maybe since it's the southernmost capital in Europe, the airport regulators assigned it ZZYZX as a joke. My vacation will be decidedly less glamorous: three weeks offroading in the Mojave, living out of my minivan. Forecast for the first night is 27 F, but it will warm up later in the week once the rain starts, lol. I'll be east of Barstow by then, so I should stay dry enough.

Turns out ZZYZX is a waypoint south of Las Vegas. Not actually near the town of Zzyzx, California, but in the same general part of the world I guess. The FAA requires that all waypoint names be five letters long and pronounceable as a word. I guess ZZYZX qualifies.

Worst flight I had the last two decades was an AF744 to Mauritius chock full of holiday traffic. Emirates overnight from Dubai to Hamburg or Düsseldorf (I forgot) on an otherwise empty center row, with 4-seat across ‘lie-flat’ as the flight attendant called it, was by far the best, especially for a €400 return trip.

I thought the 3-3-3 coach 777 experience was similar to the 2-4-2 a330 and 3-4-3 or whatever 747 Those 3-4-3 777s that United run must be hell though.

Everyone: "this configuration is hellish and I hate it." Airline: "okay, we'll make a better configuration and you can pay modestly more per seat. Not double or anything, just a bit more. Or you can have premium economy." Everyone: "Wait, what the gently caress? I'm not paying that! The other airline's tickets are $20 cheaper!" Air Canada lol. They're also running 9-abreast 787s. I think when I flew them I did so in premium economy and I found the 777 delightful. Premium economy is absolutely the way to go if you can afford it, and frankly for discretionary travel, not being able to afford PE for an overseas flight would qualify for me as "I cannot afford this trip at this time."

As a tall galoot if my company sends me anywhere I kick up a huge fuss if I can’t get them to pay extra for an exit row, now I guess that has morphed into premium economy. The bonus with exit rows is the bozos in front of me can’t recline and smash my kneecaps. I flew an AC 777 from Toronto to YVR once and wasn’t stuck in the middle 4 but it was still hellish. Would not do that again.

At most one person will want to climb over you, and at most you must climb over one person.

It might just be mindless consumption, putting money into a can and hoping you get wow in return. People walk past Trajan's column every day wondering where the Colosseum is. People burn hundreds of thousands of gallons of jet fuel every day doing absolutely gently caress all of any value for humanity. Why not do less of it?
