Where there sufficient levels of Italian mobsters, crazy super-scientists, street punks and green suited fascists?

It's Christmas in midtown. Streets were packed with punks, people in suits, and crazies.

I miss the holiday tradition of drowning the screen in loot tags, or just hanging out in the hubs, shooting the poo poo with anyone and everyone.

Yeah. IMHO Emmert is a pretty cool guy with some interesting ideas, but not a very good grasp of what people actually want.

Like, when City of Heroes launched, the ultimate power for the Empathy set gave an ally unlimited endurance (basically mana) for a minute but stunned the caster for 20 seconds. The top power for Super Reflexes set made you almost invincible for 45 seconds... but you couldn't attack. Who would want that?

Sounds like someone who thinks in terms of pen & paper roleplaying games, where that kind of bullshit can actually work just fine and even be incredibly useful.

Let's hope he has improved since then, or that there will be someone on the team who has the authority and skill to turn his half baked ideas into workable ones.

Both of those sound like they were very much designed around being able to face a specific, or perhaps a few, specific raid bosses with certain builds. That latter, assuming you could taunt/provoke the boss without needing to attack it, seems well suited to a dodge tank build. The former, also feels like something they expected would be useful for moments when a boss wasn't outputting damage itself and thus the healer didn't need to heal but would allow them to feed the mage/blaster so that character could go all out.

Definitely not choices that are very proactive, but strong in very situational ways, and when it comes to giving players a super ability that's only reached at high ranks, that kind of stuff just isn't really that fun or engaging. Those both sound like things you could toss a point into in the middle tiers as options.

Or later, later's fine.
But now would be good.

The closest feel to this I've been able to get was with Last Epoch since their last patch, where they made the Druid sub-class able to shapeshift directly between 3 different forms with their own full action bars, each ability having its own wonky scaling you can bust open even worse (like making your stuff in bugman form scale off of minion damage instead of your own damage). No part of it feels remotely balanced, you one-shot anything you look at, and you spend most of your time hunting for gear that satisfies absurdly niche stat needs. Also, it's only this one sub-class so far, of 3 in this class, and of 5 total classes.

Which gives me some MH vibes in a few different directions.

No but there's another subclass (Void Knight) where you can build around two mechanics:
- A massive-damage huge-aoe blast that auto-crits and eats all your resources
- An ability that rewinds your status(damage, resources, other cooldowns) to a few seconds before you cast it

And it's like playing a character in MH built purely on Brutals with like no crit %. You do nothing until a boss and then the screen is dead. Repeat.

College Slice
Last Epoch is really really good. You get the normal gain-levels-to-unlock-skills-and-perk-points stuff but then every so often you get to specialise in a skill, which unlocks a whole skill tree for that individual ability. You can essentially make a build just out of the skills you really enjoy using as long as they interact even a little bit. It's a really really nice compromise between the braindead arcade gameplay of Diablo 3 and the insane complexity of Path of Exile.

Not as strong as you'd expect.
I don't think there have really been characters quite like Silver Surfer or Juggernaut in terms of Diablo-alikes. At least not without tons of effort and Items put in.

Juggernaut was the first time I played an ARPG character that felt like a character. Like, every mechanic was “you are the juggernaut. You do not stop”.

I appreciate that every character in this game had a mobility option. Resulted in funny moments like watching the Punisher combat roll past Wolverine on a motorcycle.

Had Zigs on so many of my characters, because god drat an instant speed teleport was such a QoL improvement. That nerf was just the worst.

Ditto Nightcrawler, the feeling of "well if I'm not invisible or teleporting or dropping a smoke cloud or stabbing something I'm probably dead" was hard to get used to but very satisfying to make work.

It was so loving stupid in how far it’s reach exceeded it’s grasp, screen wiping in the abstract at all times and that’s why it’s the kind of game we’re still talking about four years after it shut down.
