Get your vaccine doses, wear good masks in indoor public spaces, at-home test (if you can) before any Christmas unmasked family stuff, don't have huge unmasked gatherings, and generally don't be stupid.

Yeah..."the party" (meaning everyone who needs to vote together to beat the GOP) is about a dozen kids who hate each other stuffed into a trench coat. There is no "the party." It's the GOP vs everyone else, but everyone else is also against each other and several are willing to let the GOP win to spite one another.

What are the odds of dems courting a retiring republican to snag a vote? There are a few who have definitely said they're leaving, the couple that haven't been swallowed by tumrp fever. Or am I mostly thinking of the house?

Dems voters deciding to vote Dem no matter what is what enables the party to not actually stand for anything. When a vote is guaranteed, the voter preferences behind that vote are irrelevant.

That said I think Dem leadership would choose to kill the party rather than go left even if there were votes in going left, like what happened to UK labour. But Dems saying you have to vote Dem no matter what while also saying manchin is a Dem in good standing are not doing their party any favors. You can't have a real political party that believes in nothing besides restarting student loan payments and a bipartisan highway bill.

It doesn't matter who's in the room, if you need 50 people to say yes then the only real power is being held by the final person to say yes. In this case that final person has no real incentive to say yes in the first place - he gets the same amount of money from the coal industry either way and his state is basically asleep at the wheel so he'll keep getting reelected until he rots in that chair. Sure he's a cynical opportunist with no interest in actually helping or improving anything and every interest in maintaining the status quo so he maintains his quality of life, but there's no punchline

No, I’m quite aware of that, but it’s not a totally clear cut case (in regards to the end of slavery in the state).

quote:

The West Virginia Constitution of 1863 left in lifetime slavery all of the enslaved people in western Virginia who were then older than twenty-five. But when the West Virginia legislature ratified the Thirteenth Amendment on February 3, 1865, it also passed a bill immediately abolishing slavery in the state.

Similarly the last slaves in New Jersey weren’t freed until the 13th amendment took affect.

That said I am very happy to see the amount of people who like being out in the woods and also Bigfoot. It’s all very good and awesome.

It doesn't even need to know its position, just its position relative to other Apple devices. Something to sense position, something to talk to Apple network, and power. Porbably costs less than $2 to make. If you had access to their network that's easy, otherwise you would have to find some way to talk to it but can easily do that off the shelf under $10.

I mean that's how much apple could do it for at the end of the day, but DIY you're looking at an arduino board, a GPS module, a gsm module and something to power it. The board and modules alone are gonna run you 30-40$.

Youre going to offload almost everything to Apple devices so it doesn't actually need most of that. Most arduinos have way more of everything than you actually need anyways. If you designed the board yourself it would be even cheaper since you can cut out all the redundant/extraneous stuff but getting a single board made would be expensive I think.

Oh, you would just use a breadboard I'm dumb.

The second was that technological improvements in communications would be a net benefit (woops, turns out they're just a new set of tools for bad people to project their badness).

Money from the US (and EU) got thrown at China because we needed a cheapo manufacturing base, this was post Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan (and now Vietnam is the new factory base) depending on what era you're talking about in the last 50 years. It'll be my relatives in Africa next until we run out of spaces for the cheapo factories.

The second bit, just from observation, you can't do anything about another culture and thinking it's wrong, (and thinking you understand the nuances of it is arrogant as hell), but if you want to give someone from the other place an out - open your borders to them, make them at home. Only way to win.

Nobody does anymore because a shitload of people around the world have hit comfort level.

This is good news and the increase in dose could be implemented quickly. FDA needs to stamp this one because it would be a material change to the EUA, unlike the last few tweaks to booster policy that have involved only CDC.

It’s a shame that so few people have gotten boosters, but the good news on that front is that they take effect quickly, starting to diverge from the no-boost cohort at one week and are more or less in full effect after the second. It’s not like the agonizing wait of four weeks for the second dose and an additional two weeks after that that we had with the primary series.

Your/my half-dose booster is fine and it doesn't look like in the press release that they're shooting to amend their booster to be a full dose. It's mostly research about half/full doses. And antibodies aren't the end-all be-all of infection protection anyways.

The bottom line is that the Moderna booster works, as it produces the right omicron-fighting antibodies. A full dose is "better" on antibody numbers, but there's no magic infection-precenting number to begin with. From the press release, by the time you're up for needing another booster, there *could* be an omnicron-specific booster for you, rather than just the generic, so just hang tight, you're fine.

This isn't a case where you should be too concerned about it because Pfizer/Moderna make the right antibodies. People (the world) that got AstraZenica/Sinovax have more justification to be concerned:

https://twitter.com/rebeccaballhaus/status/1472749977797632002?t=cZ5tnOnpWiFZTiso_VJhEg&s=19

Big note though: those vaccines don't make the right antibodies, but there's plenty of positive spillover effect (per Fauci) in the T-cell areas, so it helps to keep people out of the hospital still.
