None of the dragon quests are all that hard by design. I think they just tuned it for base players, without factoring in how much a difference things like smithing make on your damage output.

Agreed. Its very good "choose your own story" book, but really overrated as a game.

far cry 3 is a good game with a good plot unless you’re a person so incapable of noticing subtext or context that even the lack of subtlety of the game smashing you in the face with its themes to a loud old Skrillex song won’t help you pick up on it

It is not, but it would not hurt to have 2-3 different last day scenarios that play out based on different triggers. Since the last day in any case is beyond the point of no return.

The old jaded sniper living in the fort could easily be different persons who had different reasons, depending on what you uncovered and what you did not. And could play out on that map a bit differently. I mean come on, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis did something similar 20 years ago.

I asked the recommendation thread for RPGs that have a central theme/concept that it addresses directly and does well, citing the Shin Megami Tensei and Ultima series as games that directly address the topic of ethics/morals as a whole, probing that actual topic, rather than just having a bunch of choices that amount to narrative branching but without exploration of the topic. I cited Dishonored, Deus Ex, and the Witcher as that kind, cause really, I mean they have choices or they represent your play style in how things play out, but what those choices revolve around aren't really what the games are about, generally. It's a niche request, and I understand that being kind of a pain in the rear end.

I headed off the suggestion of Disco Elysium in any case, and I specifically said I'm a turbonerd and asked them to "dig deep". The responses I got before being told basically that RPGs don't do this really, and that what I want is a visual novel or walking simulator, were Life is Strange, Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny, Pathologic, Omori, Undertale, and Planescape: Torment. The deepest digging there

Look all I'm sayin is, if our best games recommenders are saying RPGs aren't the place for stories that with central themes for exploration then maybe player agency in RPGs is a little pointless too

It's largely about leftism attempts to dethrone capitalism, and the conflicts that often occurs during the process. It's essentially a commentary on modern political ideologies.

RPG players? The Witcher and Obsidian titles for example have choices in the game that frequently change and affect the character's path and others around them.

Yeah Disco Elysium is the ultimate role playing game because the story is the same and you choose the role you play in it. There's a lot of writing to get to the same point.

Instead of pickpocketing random containers you get well written story if you choose the thief path.
