Yay, a happy ending! Thank you for looking out for her.

She's an adorable little one and looks to have moulted her tail feathers off.

Want to go hug my hens now, but it's half nine at night and they've been in bed five hours now.

Does that mean halfway to nine or nine plus a half?

She was even moltier (that's a word now) in person if you got a look all over. Rescue lady was worried about her ability to deal with the cold tonight. She's apparently relatively young, too. Lots of very friendly burbling. I really wanted to cuddle her but waited until more people were around before attempting contact -- didn't want to scare her so she'd run away. There was a minor freakout when she was picked up but she settled quickly in the carrier (where there was food, haha.)

I have been promised an update on her name if/when she joins as a full member of the woman's flock!

Happy update!!!

A woman on the county backyard chicken group offered to take her in. She has two hens of the same breed in her flock and lives pretty close by so it seems kind of meant to be. (Re: zoning, apparently hens are allowed, but in the immediate area there are only apartments and commercial properties so I really have no idea how she made it here.) I hung out giving her some food and water to keep nearby, and then the rescuer and her son & friend arrived and helped corral her. If no one claims her, she'll join rescue lady's flock after getting a checkup, proper chicken introductions etc. The kids enjoyed getting to go on an adventure to rescue a chicken.

Further chicken tax:

Thanks for the advice folks! I am happy to have become a backyard chicken keeper myself, if only for half an hour or so. :3:

Glad you were able to help her out.

Wandering chickens generally won't last long in the wild.

Yay! I’m glad she’s safe! Commendations to you, effervescible, for saving her.

Last weekend I saw a flock (gang?) of roosters foraging on the side of the road while traveling through South Carolina. I assume that they were dumped there :(

Ah, thanks. I laughed that you put it in 24 hour format so that I would have to think about the conversion to the 12 hour format. Half past nine.

Your lifetime chicken survival rate is incredible if you stop now you'll have us all beat forever.

We finally accidentally locked one of our girls our of the coop/run overnight. Fortunately she was fine and we got her in before she blew away today in these winds half the US is getting.

glad she was ok! that is my constant fear, especially since my favorite hen, Lil' Pep, had started wandering out in the middle of the yard at dusk, instead of going to bed

since there are just seven of them, i do a head count every night to make sure everyone is in before i lock up

We always get filthy looks from our hens with regard to bad weather. It's so obviously our fault.

Marzipan flew the coop today and is now one with the neighbor's thicket of extremely tangled and impassable wild grape vines and bushes.

If he chooses to come home, he will be welcomed back with open arms and wings.

I hope he survives a beautiful wild quail life!

I did try bringing one of the girls over to call for him but she was just mad about being held.

I tried to get him, myself, but he just went deeper and deeper into the mess. At this point I need either a machete or to become a snake.

the other chickens have been picking at her feathers, so i think between that feather loss, and the broody feather loss, she is going to need to stay inside for awhile to recover. we are ordering a chicken diaper...

My German shepherd had knocked over the trash and chewed plastic and garbage to pieces. I was out picking up little shreds so the chickens could free-range outside their run and my daughter decided to just go ahead and let them out. I was scrambling to pick up little garbage bits before they could find or eat any of them. In that pic of Margaret you can see she is pissed at me because I just stopped her from getting a green shred of plastic that looked somewhat like a vegetable.

One of our earliest ex-batts grabbed, ran off with and ate a bright red elastic band before we could stop her. It was pooped out whole some days later and was BRIGHT GREEN.
