The Myst 2 walkthrough was like a small novel and it took about 45 minutes to load each screen on the commodore 64 so i would just study the walkthrough and pretend i was playing it. Also never had any quarters so just pretended to play arcade games for hours.

We used to talk about death, she said. We don’t anymore. Why is that? I don’t know. It’s because it’s here. There’s nothing left to talk about. I wouldn’t leave you. I don’t care. It’s meaningless. You can think of me as a faithless slut if you like. I’ve taken a new lover. He can give me what you cannot. Death is not a lover. O yes he is. Please don’t do this. I’m sorry. I can’t do it alone.' gently caress does Cuno care? (He doesn't care.)

Just because he writes the opposite extreme doesn't suddenly mean that smothering your text in the stuff doesn't make it uncomfortably off feeling to read.

I'm pretty ambivalent about DE's grammar, but in so far as a) capturing the cadence and phrasing of the character who's speaking in that screenshot and b) deliberately replicating the way people often write online it's 100% successful.

Either Cormac McCarthy's work would be better with punctuation or it wouldn't. If anyone wants to talk poo poo on the writing itself with regards to characterization and whatnot that's cool, but it's laughable to go for punctuation before anything else without giving other work the same filter

QuarkJets posted:I know that you were criticizing the obstructive grammar and atrocious flow of this ad lib but maybe you just didn't get it 'atrocious flow', 'obstructive grammar' Lmao. That's pretty funny, maybe you can figure out why. The point is that segment reads easily, and quickly paints a pretty vivid picture of the person they are talking about. That's why it's good writing. It's funny that someone chose that to represent the 'bad' writing in the game when 1, it's not bad and 2, there's way worse writing in that game if you're really looking for it. It's also funny because one of the only games that dares to attempt to write intelligently is dumped on, for its WRITING, because it's not the marvel style one liners and base simplicity of pretty much every other game. That's amusing to me. I think people just don't like to read actual prose in games and react aggressively when they do. 'Writing in games should be as dumb and straightforward as possible at all times, and no chances should be taken', apparently because otherwise it makes people feel stupid and frustrated for some reason and we get into situations like this

i would rather enjoy my time reading a terrible schlocky generic fantasy book or 500 chapter serial web fiction thing on my kindle in a chair or in bed than read a 10/10 story in videogame textbox it's even worse if a story-based videogame is based on voiced cutscenes instead of text because that means you can't even read at your own speed video games are just a bad medium for stories.

there's a book called MEG. they made it into a Jason Statham movie. The cover of the book has a shark and a t-rex fighting in some water. There isn't a t-rex in the book, but there is a giant megalodon shark, and a submarine fires a nuclear torpedo into it's mouth while it tries to eat them. The writing in it was better than the writing in 99% of videogames.
