Alexander's problem might just be that the actual bosses lack a lot of narrative context almost all of the time? Like mostly they're just interchangeable robots without a good set of cohesive framing devices that give each encounter a theme? Alexander himself is great, and Brute Justice is at least fun?

Alexander was also, like Coils, the era where there wasn't the now-common practice of a hub area between each raid, right? So even though narratively each tier of Alexander is supposed to be a super lengthy dungeon crawl across Alexander's ludicrously bigger-on-the-inside body, it doesn't really feel like it?

Yeah, it's kinda weird, you're just sort of making your way through, fighting one robot after another. And I really want narrative context for some of these fights, especially Brute Justice and Ratfinx Twinkledinks.

i wouldn't ever really want some of the more tedious coils or alex raid fights to come back, but I wouldn't mind a little more variation in how fights function structurally. wow players always talk about council fights, are those interesting? some kind of more aggressively dps race/uptime check kind of fight? i'm just spitballing here i don't play enough MMOs to have real opinions but I just know there have to be more ways to build a fight than phase one, kill adds before a bar fills, phase two (phase one mechanics but faster or overlapping).

Worsts? Expert: When I get something besides The Dead Ends I'll be able to judge better. Numbers: I'm gonna pick one for each tier. Hullbreaker Isle because of that Kraken fight at the end, Xelphatol because of the time wasting balloons, The Drowned City of Skalla because I completely forgot it existed, and The Grand Cosmos for having the least exciting music of all level 80 dungeons. Levelling: The Thousand Slows of Toto-Rak. You know why. Trials: A lot of this list is influenced by luck, and my luck had it so that every time I get Zurvan in Containment Bay Z1T9, I've forgotten if you're supposed to match colors or oppose colors to survive, and so has everyone else. MSQ: Castrum Meridianum. Guildhests: Alliance Raids: Labyrinth of the Ancients. Exploding skeletons, starting Atomos early, letting the bomb feed and explode, questionable line of sight detection on meteors, and the coinflip on whether or not the second Ancient Flare will kill everyone, this place has too many stupid ways to die. Normal Raids: The Cuff of the Father. It's just trash packs? Always has been.

Correspondingly, since some people think I hate this game, I'd also be curious to see what the goon favorites are. Mine: Leveling: Qitana Ravel. I dig the music and Mayan aesthetic, I still smirk whenever I see the name Batsquatch, and it feels challenging without being overly hard. Numbers: Sohr Khai. Gorgeous visuals, great music, and you get to punch some moogles. Can't ask for anything more. Trials: Shinryu. Rating this one primarily on the basis of being my favorite music in any instance in the entire game, but also because I enjoy seeing who knows about that first tidal wave and who doesn't. Alliance Raid: Void Ark. It's the closest we're likely to ever get to a Skies of Arcadia crossover, much less a Skies of Arcadia 2. Normal Raid: Eden's Verse: Fulmination. Somehow, on my first trip here, my group one shotted this and I didn't miss a single mechanic. No idea how that happened, but this one's been special to me ever since.

On the topi of worst roulettes: Expert: Not really one. Usually Expert is less guilty of having horrible dungeons or being boring (since you get to play on max level) and more guilty of having to do it anywhere between 3-5 times a week to cap so it can get repetitive real fast. Leveling: All dungeons up to Toto-Rak count, can't decide which is worst, but Tam-Tara has an edge for me because its corridors are long and you have to follow the tank for ages when they wall pull despite no one having AOE. Numbers: Too many dungeons to tell. I guess Neverreap? Or hell, Matoya's Relict, cool design but meh to play. Trials: Steps and the later trials mostly. Thankfully 90% of the time it's Ifrit/Titan Hard and I can sleep. Alliance Raid: Copied Factory cause the HP is too big, Labirinth for being old and boring and not fun fast like Syrcus and... well, any raid where people just sleep. Normal Raid: Agree on A2 as some said. Also Chadarnook for IDK the reason, I just don't like it. MSQ: Castrum because people forgot the fast strat against Livia (wait till all canons are ready to fire so you get all add waves at once and don't get the adds attacking the hands constantly making this poo poo last longer goddamnit) Guildhest: The bomb one for being longer due to needing to wait for all adds to explode.

Jetrauben posted:Yiazmat just feels WAAAAAY too durable and kinda random with his instakill mechanics unless I'm just too dumb to grasp them. Stone Breath is just him doing a cone from his current facing, Rake (the pinball version) shows the direction he'll be turning when bouncing off a wall, and Death Strike is just a stack marker. The big thing that usually gets people is when the platform is divided in two for Magnetic Lysis - you get polarized to one of the colors, and if you're standing on the same color you'll be floating which will make you take more damage from Dust Storm (the standard raidwide AoE) AND get a debuff for the next Cyclone cast (the one that swirls the alliances around the arena) that causes instant death. Basically you want to keep your feet on the ground for Dust Storm casts (you can be in the wrong zone if you need to react for movement, otherwise), and ideally the tank will have Yiazmat in the middle if he's not using the pinball Rake so people can stand in their proper colors and still attack.

Expert: Kind of sick of the MSQ one because I keep getting it, but it's not horribly offensive to me yet 5678: There's too many of them, none of them really stand out to me. I guess the ARR ones are kind of boring but none are The Worst Leveling: All of the ARR ones are bad but Copperbell is the worst because of the slime boss Trials: All the ones I really hated running have been power crept out of being pub destroyers, I guess Singularity Reactor because it's long and is so undertuned that you don't have to do anything during it anymore? MSQ: Both of them Guildhests: The kill-all-of-them-at-the-same time one is seared in my brain as being basically impossible unless you let people who refuse to cooperate die Alliance: Either Copied Factory for having too much HP and a really boring back half, or WoD for always showing up in my roulettes and also being boring Normal Raid: E12N, hands down. Between the tutorial phase 1 where you walk back and forth between two spots a grand total of twice for the entire phase, and the extremely long and dull intermission phase, the fight takes 6 minutes to start out of a 10 minute fight. It's the only instance in the game I consider bailing on when it comes up, I hate it that much. THAT'S MY COLOR Ryanbomber fucked around with this message at 00:19 on Dec 23, 2021 |

Ibram Gaunt posted:They need to implement solo trials to get from point A to B in the raid series between fights..They tried something like this for Omega I think. Been years Omega did have one at the start of each of the sets before you unlocked the first boss (or maybe it was just the first two sets?). Doing something in between the fights in a set would be fine for DF players but really annoying for groups/statics. Having to disband and rebuild the party in between bosses, not to mention differences in completion rate or even having to wait for someone that failed and had to start over. Maybe they could do it if they made use of the heavily scaling Echo buff they use in CLL/Dalriada. That would take a lot of development time they could be putting into the repeatable fights instead of one-time story beats, though. It could be really cool, but I don't think it would be justifiable from the development end.

Copperbell is only bad if you don't realize that a good chunk of the mobs tether and can be ignored. Also the slime boss of copperbell has more life than Nael in T9 and is just shy of the Avatar in T8. It was the highest HP boss in 2.0.
