The way MBC are doing the performances for their survival show is pretty fun, even if the Pretty Savage performance here was kinda sucky. I always knew Soyeon was very talented but she comes across as some sort of savage idol industry genius in this show imo.

She has a pretty unique career at this point, especially for a female artist. Went through like 3 reality shows herself, 20+ auditions, debuted as a soloist first before basically making Idle happen with her own writing and producing, featured on tons of collabs, etc. She has credits on over 50 tracks now too, all in spite of Cube sucking and telling her no at many steps along the way.

I don't think it can be understated how much input she's had in g-idle. I'm sure she's got some background connections and things, but an easy example of her influence is that pre-debut she found different vocal coaches for the members to keep them from all sounding too similar. Cube being such a dumpster fire actually helped them out, because that gave them the situation to have the sort of influence on their own music that you usually only see with artists that have finished their initial 7-year contract.

In a related thought line, I think they really proved to the industry that listeners would like having female idols more involved with their own music even early in their career (similar to like btob/bts and probably some others that I don't know off-hand for male groups). Like before them most of the involvement I noticed tended to not happen for a couple albums and then would be nearly always b-sides and usually like joint writing credits (with exceptions ofc). Now you're having multiple new groups with members having credits on debut albums, which is really good.

Oh my girl is such a frustrating group for me, because they'll release a track I love and then like 2 that I can hardly listen to. They've also got some really good singing chops that I think don't get shown off in their songs very well.

I was thinking I'd feel bad for the people elsewhere in the world watching that just need to sleep, I've only got a 2 hour time difference with Korea so it'll line up with bed time nicely for me if they ever stop

also feel bad for the security who probably just wanna go but hopefully they get overtime!

Oh neat they did a video for this. She did one of those video channel versions back. I know why they didn't use it as a title track, but I like this song better. While I'd like it to do a bit more musically, it also doesn't feel like its trying too hard in order to stand out. I'm not sure if that makes sense, one of those things that makes sense in my head but that I don't know if it translates to text well.

Jihyo was giving 110% the whole concert and brought the other members up with her. The only reason they stopped might have been covid protocol. Venues could only stay open until 9 and they went until 8:45.

I also thought that despite being totally live, the production and camerawork was way, way, better than the online only show last year. And I hope companies continue online broadcasts. 3 years ago you would have never gotten to see a show like that, even as a "world tour", since most overseas setlists and ments stick to the script.

This was my first Beyond Live. Maybe won't be the last? I would watch all of them for Twice for sure, and for other artists I like that hopefully do the same thing (G-Idle pls), because yeah 100%, the production was really good!

Shared sentiments on Jihyo. She showed why she's my absolute favorite; you can see she leaves everything on the stage. Her show presence is nuts lol. When she started to cry during Cactus, I was like maaaaan :unsmith: haha.

I've only ever been to small concerts for indie bands. The biggest artist I've ever seen live was probably Lights I guess? Never been to see a huge band like say, Coldplay or other mainstream artists of the like so I wasn't sure what to expect. Still guessing k-pop live shows are different to western productions, but I really enjoyed the format. All the ments and those pre-recorded videos inbetween setlist chunks were cute. I was also sorta taken aback by how "reserved" the crowd was, though I'm sure COVID protocols/social distancing affecting the venue layout was a limiter for how crazy they could've been—or maybe it's a cultural thing? I wanna be dancing and jumping all around while watching Twice live lol.

[edit] I didn't check the live chat often, but when I did, I saw roughly ~40k users. Unsure if it went higher than that. Pretty crazy though to have that many watching, especially if a chunk of them were in my or similar time zones lmao. I watched the stream in my den with my wireless on-ear headphones and the experience was so good.

This was the first one that was just taking a normal concert and broadcasting it, and honestly the format is a lot better for it. I think the VOD of last year's is still available for purchase on VLive, but I thought the AR stages were janky compared to what MNet pulls off for the online KCons, and having half the stuff pre-recorded made it feel lifeless compared to a lot of other online concerts.

I-dle's online concert was one of the earliest in the pandemic, since they were about to tour before it got cancelled, but also one of the best. It's the only one I can think of that had individual member cams running almost the whole show length.

teagone posted:

You get all those things normally, but especially with the Seoul concerts, there's more leeway to go off topic during the ments, prepare special stages, or perform 8 encores out of nowhere. So it's nice that online gives us a window into that experience that you'd only otherwise know about from people translating fan accounts on twitter. Plus online lets all the groups that can't pour money into a world tour do something domestic but still reach international fans.

The audience was banned from cheering/shouting/talking due to covid. It sounds like you got into kpop in the last 2 years. Look up older concert footage or even music show clips from 2019 or earlier for the real experience. Being at a kpop concert is like listening to dinosaurs murdering cats for 2 hours, and in Korea all the dinosaurs and dying cats know the fanchants too.

Oh yeah, I've seen concert footage, show stages, etc. My smol brain just couldn't put two and two together re: COVID protocols and the Twice members saying "thank you for sticking to the rules" during the ment bits while the show was happening and me wondering why the crowd was being so quiet.
