Perry Mason Jar posted:Timothy Chalamet says they're malign and Jennifer Lawrence says no it's worse than that, they're stupid - it's explicitly in the dialogue. Yeah, I remember the line. "I wish they were all as evil and devious as you're giving them credit for..." Except the plot exactly bares out that they *are* all that evil, given that the rumors of the colony ship mentioned during the movie turned out to be true in the end.

Chalamet is saying they're malign super genius puppetmasters and Lawrence says that no, its worse, they're stupid I didn't get the sense she was debating the malign part Cup Runneth Over posted:I was a little disappointed the movie didn't come up with any bought and paid-for scientists to say the comet isn't actually on a crash course/wouldn't be extinction-level, but I guess that would be too real They alluded to this, and the apologist liberal scientist role was kinda filled by Leo, but yea, arguably one of the pulled punches.

We're not supposed to think of Jennifer Lawrence as an idiot or rube. So why include the line at all? The audience is supposed to BE Jennifer Lawrence.

Perry Mason Jar posted:"No" is not "yes and". I didn't take it as her objecting to the malign part - it was specifically when he starts getting into the more conspiracy theory guiding hand stuff like colony ships that she objects no - they're not that clever, I've met them, believe me, they're stupid. I'll rewatch it at some point and maybe I'll see it differently, maybe I'm recalling the conversation flow wrong or something.

DiCaprio's character was clearly a shot at NdT and how he and other scientists have been neutered by popular media overexposure and the perks it provides. Rocking the boat? Bag over your head, "off the grid."

The Next Disaster Coming to the Great Plains | "If we lose these aquifers, we lose nearly 20% of the world’s grain crop, >40% of our nation’s beef production and about 40% of vegetables, nuts, and fruits consumed in the US"quote:GARDEN CITY, Kan.—A century after the Dust Bowl, another environmental catastrophe is coming to the High Plains of western Kansas. The signs are subtle but unequivocal: dry riverbeds, fields of sand, the sound of irrigation motors straining to pump from dwindling aquifers. Planets Dryin', Cloud. By which I mean they'll raise their prices fifty times over and laugh in their champaign cellars about it until dragged out and shot.

This means I can continue to drink 24 beers an evening despite my ongoing liver failure.

My favorite scene in the movie is that moment of clarity and realization where he knows his wealth is worthless and everyone in that control room is about to tear him apart.
