If nothing else, a background in Marxist education keeps Chinese policy makers grounded - while Western policymakers are purely ideological thinkers operating on the rules of a game that they made up in the wake of the Cold War ending.

I get that but you kinda have to pretend that NATO isn't aimed right at Russia if you want to keep saying it should just sit tight and not do anything while everyone around it joins up. And also pretend that the negotiations aren't just between US and Russia, and that NATO allies and Ukraine have any agency in this too.

There was a good 10 year period from 91 to 9/11 when NATO had no real existential excuse, and something like the Yugoslav Wars let it pretend like it could still do something other than be belligerent with Russia. Which, at the time, was more or less run by a US puppet. 9/11 also revitalized NATO because it gave everyone something to do in Afghanistan.
