I mean based on my sample size of my one drive to work while it was raining today, the auto wipers worked great. And when I was playing around after delivery it was super easy to hit the physical wiper button, then quickly tap whatever setting I need on the screen. Do I prefer a normal stalk? Probably. Is it horrible? Nah

Yeah the auto wipers can be a little finicky when it starts to rain but the physical button to wipe works fine.

My favorite tesla story is a friend of mine who took a very specific ding to his bumper from some road trash. Suddenly the tesla drops all power and wouldnt exceed 10 mph or so and since he was on a 6 lane highway thats a bit of an issue.

Eventually limps off the highway and calls a shop. Turns out that bit of road trash had knocked a sensor on the bumper into the bumper and it was reading an obstacle right ahead constantly.

Sensor mount was broken or something so he had to wait like three days to get a new part. Think its like the third time something similar to that has happened to him.

Shocked it was only three days... buddy of mine works in claims and has all sorts of horror stories for customers that can't get even the most basic parts to fix their cars for months upon months, meanwhile their rental car coverage dries up. That plus Tesla not using automative rated parts for stuff such as screens (to withstand moderately hot or cold conditions) is a recipe for trouble

I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

The early Model S seem to be pretty rock solid, when they were essentially coach built. My Father in law has had one since 2015 and it hasn't needed any maintenance other than brakes and rubber.

Then Elon's delusions of grandeur went to Mars and he thought he was the second doing of Ford.

I've used some form of Android phone since smartphones were a thing but I'm open to the idea of changing things up if I hear a good argument for it. I've had iPads on and off for a while, and I can't imagine a smaller one of these being my daily driver.

What about the iPhone do you like the most after switching?

First, it’s lots of smaller things that add up to a lot on the software side of things, and my nearest Android equivalent would be the Essential phone, just for context.

A thing that’s nice is the background knowledge in my head that it’ll get at least 5 years of security updates. I’ve managed to shatter my phones before then, but still.

On a related note, I like that I can take my phone to a place to get it fixed and covered by the insurance I bought for it and some deductible. No haggling with some Asurion wage slave in a call center somewhere.

Animations are much smoother, the phone is pretty dang zippy - moreso than any top of the line Android phone I used.

Face ID is a way bigger upgrade than I thought it would be, though I do find myself reaching for the fingerprint scanner I used to have every so often.

Holy moly if you use a password manager like I do with LastPass, you’re in for a real treat. The prompt to fill the information is in the keyboard, not overlaid on some text box. It’s great.

I use Edge as my browser because the Costco website works on it and there was some whack poo poo afoot with it, especially wrt tab placement, that hasn’t replicated since.

My old phone, a Pixel 4a had some crazy weird issues going on that nobody else I know with one had, so I’m also kinda enamored with a functional phone at all.

Notifications are great, too. I frequently felt compelled to answer or dismiss notifications as they came in, but I have to deliberately check them on here.

I really really like the native email and calendar apps. Absolutely whips the poo poo out of Outlook, Gmail, and Inbox (RIP). I haven’t completely figured out email signatures on there, but I’ll make it happen, I’m sure.

I like the app tracking controls, too. It feels like I’m almost consenting to living in hell.

The variable refresh rate screen is also great - I’d miss it on any phone, now.

The gesture typing setup is great - feels a lot more accurate than Gboard or Swype ever did.

I don’t have perfect muscle memory yet, but I’m really pleased with the phone and experience overall already, and I’m looking forward to having an iPad Pro again.

Yeah, I have a 2016 S and it’s been solid other than an issue with the entertainment system thing and a headlight issue that I think but can’t prove was from the neighbours’ construction crew bumping it. Missing a bunch of the AP 2.0 stuff and only a 90kWh battery, but it has served me well.

Would a PO-20 be good for someone that has basically zero music knowledge to learn on? I've always wanted to learn about making music and playing instruments or synths but it all feels super daunting. All the different Pocket Operators look really cool and it'd be cool to make some neat synthwave stuff! Obviously the PO-20 is more chip-tuney so if I was looking at more of a synthwave sound, is there something better to play around with?

The PO line is great for people with no prior knowledge, it's where I started. I would youtube the different operators and see if the workflow and sound of any of them strike a chord.

The PO's also aren't going to teach you much about synthesis. You aren't manually creating beeps from scratch on them, just modifying stock (or recorded) sounds into beats. If the PO-20 is cool but you want different beeps, I'd recommend the PO-33 KO. It lets you sample sounds and save them to the device, so you get more creative freedom at the cost of a slightly steeper learning curve. If I'm drunk and want to make a fun beat without my brain, I grab my 20. If I'm throwing something in my backpack for a day at the park or quick work overnight, it's the 33. Here's a decent video to showcase the thing:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5xUTguFE9Aw

When I got comfy using it and wanted to manually create my own sounds, I got a Korg Monologue. Then 3 Volca's, then some iPad software, then a desktop DAW, then my OP-1... Be more careful than me. Which reminds me, there are a lot of synths available for iOS and Android if you have smart devices.

TL;DR, they're a lot of fun for learning to make beats in a small package. I love them. They also supplement my other gear well.

Haha poo poo, that video sold me on the PO-33 as well. Can't wait to try out both! Do you have any good videos to start with for an absolute beginner? I'm cool with just playing with what's available and seeing what I can make with the Arcade. Some of the effects from the Arcade sound really neat!

Rolo
Nov 16, 2005

Hmm, what have we here?
The arcade has a “chord” function that adds a cool synthy progression on top while altering the pitch of your song to play along with it. It’s my favorite thing that it does and if you don’t feel like learning what button corresponds to what chord you can just throw stuff against the wall and see what sticks.

Anyways, I liked this style of YouTube tutorial, something that takes a step by step situational approach:

https://youtu.be/i8Js9T-3DxE

I just kinda jumped around YouTube for 2-3 videos and had it down in about an hour. Once you get a rough handle of the commands and features, all you need is practice to cement it all in your memory. Then off you go!

Teenage Engineering does have PDF guides for all their stuff. I wouldn’t say it’s for a beginner to learn the instrument as much as it’s to remember how to do something specific. If you open the unit and look at their instructions you’re going to be cross-eyed.

I actually returned the OP-Z I posted earlier after syncing my OP-1 to Koala Sampler and fiddling with that sequencer. It was 4.99 and now I have a small ripoff SP404-like setup.

I started doing hobby composing ~4 months ago from nothing. Get a cheap DAW like Reaper (which also has a free 60 day trial, that never stops you actually using it after that time, and is $60 to buy), watch some of their videos on getting started with it, pick up some really cheap synths/free ones that are out there, and start messing around.

Throw down random notes. Select random chords and put those down. Just mess around with stuff, and figure out what you like. You aren't doing it for anyone but yourself, so all that matters is that you like it. Maybe you enjoy it, maybe you don't, but the buy in is basically $0 if you have a computer.

I finished this one this week: https://soundcloud.com/poltzart/on-the-border-of-a-dream

And this is the last synth type thing I did: https://soundcloud.com/poltzart/it-tolls-for-you

edit: you can also get something like this https://www.arturia.com/products/hybrid-synths/minilab-mkii/overview usually for around $110-120 and it has keys, mod/pitch wheel, pads, and lots of knobs to turn, and comes with some cool plugins from Arturia.

Thanks! Yeah Reaper is really great, and the price can't be beat. It's very utilitarian in design, but gets the job done, and they have a ton of videos on their site to teach you how to use it. I will probably move on to Nuendo at some point, but not until they're having a massive sale as I don't want it THAT badly.

Word of caution: plugins are super easy to buy, and you always want something new. They're like in app purchases of free to play games. Before you know it you've spent way more than you realized. But at least you can actually do something with them! And there are several that you can even resell.

Yeah, a ton. I’m pretty sure there used to be an iOS thread in Musician’s Lounge, don’t know if it’s still active.

Check the app store for anything from Moog (a new Animoog recently came out and their Minimoog Model D app is also good), Audiokit’s SynthOne, Korg Gadget, or Sunrizer Synth.

There’s also a guy on YouTube named Jakob Haq who has tons of videos on iOS apps and production.
