There's a large handful of them! And most are in a lot of trouble

PwC's most recent crypto report found that the median crypto hedge fund only had $15M in assets under management. Despite having 6 payrolled employees, the median fund also produces a mere $300,000 in revenues.

They'll need to start charging brutally high management fees, foregoing their own pay, and/or taking on massive risk to fund their own operations

There will be LOTS of crypto hedge fund kabooms in the news soon

I really doubt most hedge funds are just picking stocks at this point. They are buying derivatives you don’t understand of things you also don’t understand.

derivatives and spot, the same as any other hedge. it's basically the same as the stock market just 24x7.

I would also be very skeptical of average crypto hedge at 15m. I'd be skeptical of even 150m, both being conservative estimates that underwhelm on AUM.

My neighbor traded in their old BMW SUV (not sure what model) for a new BMW SUV on the basis of "it's Christmas and that is when the best deals are."

He knows how much he paid, but has no idea what the discount was. He just assumed it was the highest because of Christmas.

His old SUV was only a year or two old and I remember when he bought it he said one of the reasons he pulled the trigger was because they threw in a bunch of free extras and the free "BMW Parking Only" sign was his favorite part.

He is the only person I know in real life who has actually bought a car because it was a holiday and I am 90% sure he bought the old BMW because it was a holiday as well.

It is a nice car! No free sign this time, though.

I thought car sales were still pretty rare due to shortages.

A quick look online says BMW is offering small discounts of "up to" $1750-$2500, but only to people who both finance through them and are current BMW owners. And dealers can opt out of offering it.

Doing a trade-in probably moves you to the front of the queue, especially for something late-model, because they get their cut of the car you're buying AND the car you're selling.

Hedge funds weren't about picking stocks that outperform. Their purpose was to invest in assets that wouldn't correlate with the broader market so that rich people would have a hedge in case the market crashed. Then a few hedge funds started generating ridiculously high returns based primarily on insider trading and fraud, which created a rush of FOMO for people who saw the returns and wanted to get rich. It's a really similar phenomenon to crypto.

It’s simpler than that. They invested in illiquid assets so they could only take rich investors. So people assumed if rich people invest in them they must be better. So now they’re nothing more than a regular investment vehicle but with higher fees and clients who feel like they must get something for those higher fees.

Do you mean funds that require accredited investors? Those go both ways........your marks have to be wealthy enough to qualify, but your pool is smaller.

Oh, right. Okay, so sorry I'm a boring investor.

quote:

Instead, shares are traded on an exchange, typically, and other market participants act as the corresponding buyers or sellers. The fund itself does not issue or redeem shares daily. Like stocks, CEFs hold an initial public offering at their launch. With the capital raised during this IPO, the portfolio managers then buy securities befitting the fund's investment strategy.

This sounds interesting, like it's barely skirting a bunch of securities laws. Oh, wait.....it was specifically carved out as such.

At its most fundamental level, a CEF is an investment structure (not an asset class), organized under the regulations of the Investment Company Act of 1940.

I can't/won't spek to the bitcoin because you already know, but I've had a paypal DEBIT card for years, because if you sell things on ebay or other unfortunate sites (like stubhub) this is the easy way to get paid. And then you want to drain that non-FDIC poo poo account ASAP.

I think my favorite thing about Crypto is that it has absolutely wrecked people’s free time and mental well being.

At least with stocks and options you got to unplug on weekends and holidays unless you were some hedge fund manager, but now every wannabe crypto millionaire, and now that large institutions are invested in crypto, every financial analyst mba douchebag, gets to stress about their portfolio 24/7.

I’m sure this permanent level of stress will have no long term mental health effects in the long term.

I was at a wedding one of the days that crypto dropped like 10-15% in a day and there was a large contingent of dudes standing to one side just stressfully looking at their phones, it was great.

I did that, Venmo had a similar promotion about a month earlier. I was curious what would happen and all it really meant spending was the initial fee, about a dollar between the two transactions.

My $50 is now $53.40. Plus the already spent statement credit.

This being crypto and still regulated, there are some differences here. Including the ability to take in more clients & funds over time as needed, but same zero tolerance on encouraging people to join the fund. Mostly the same, though. Still going to be about trading butts.

That's just Forex with extra steps. The main selling point of crypto when I was into it was that you'd buy some and then you'd hold it as it would rise progressively.

People just want to gamble but are afraid of casinos it seems.
