Ford wasn't as evil as Nixon, but he hosed up pretty much everything, foreign and domestic.

And while Reagan was Satan, Bush Sr. was Satan with more wars and a collapsing economy.

Then Junior was the absolute worst.

And while on paper Junior was much worse than Trump in most regards, Trump gets that career all-time first ballot hall of fame assist on throwing Pandora's Fascism Box wide open.

LMAO that we live in a world where all the non-whites and gays and disobedient women will be executed to preserve water for the chosen whites and the end of civilization will literally be the legacy of America electing the TV diaper clown.

Ford was the last honest Republican president imo

Look, he never wanted the job. His greatest ambition was to be Speaker of the House. The problem was after Agnew resigned they told Nixon the only person they would confirm as VP was Ford

He knew the Nixon pardon would tank him but he didn't do it with nefarious intent. He did it because he believed it was right for the country. We can certain debate whether that was the case but his heart was in the right place for it

But yeah... He did mess up a lot. I do wonder what would have happened with the co-presidency in the 1980s had he and Reagan come to an agreement though

Yeah, he took the VP job primarily because of pressure from the party and told his wife being VP for a few years would be a good ending and then he could retire. The economic and foreign disasters were all inherited. He didn’t want to run for President but the party was worried if he didn’t win that Reagan would get the nomination and they thought Reagan was unelectable.

LOL

The co-presidency thing was unlikely to work. Reagan barely put up with Bush until near the end of his Presidency when they started to get along and Ford was much further from Reagan in his views than Bush was. Ford was in the liberal wing of the GOP back when that still existed and was pro-ERA and started the process of letting the draft dodgers come home.

I think a better alternate history is that Ford refuses to run for reelection, Reagan gets the nomination and has to deal with the still-pervasive fallout of Nixon and loses to Carter. The GOP gives up on Reagan’s loonier economic theories as an electoral dead end and the world is a better place and Carter is defeated four years later by someone else who is much more sane, probably Bush and both parties continue their battle over the middle until the Perot/Trump ticket in 1996.

Oh, the south will, it's trying now. It won't be anywhere near the height it did in the 1860's though. It'll just be pockets of assholes storming government offices till they get bored and go home and managing to put their assholes in office to write garbage legislation to remove rights and roll back human rights a few decades at a time till they've destroyed everything and leach off federal dollars...like Kentucky or Kansas

And republicans would die before they elect a woman.

So it's definitely going to be some complete bag of poo poo random rich nazi pig CEO of some company that's under intense IRS and SEC investigation. Their campaign will be just straight up direct promises of fascism and violence against liberals.

Harris will counter this psychotic rhetoric by doing a funny dance with Jimmy Fallon.

She will lose by 70+ electoral votes.

Republican shittiness goes back way further than Nixon. Trump's move of having federal agents suddenly pick up a bunch of protesters was straight out of the Lincoln playbook, except Lincoln decided he could detain whoever he wanted indefinitely for any reason he wanted, and when the SCOTUS said "uhhhh you can't do that" Lincoln just ignored them. He later threatened Congress to retroactively make his actions legal, and when they took too long he started arresting representatives lol. And while the overall intention of this was good (to fight a racist slave empire and its sympathizers) many of the arrests were inarguably not in pursuit of that intention, so the situation was hosed up no matter how you slice it

e: Now imagine Trump trying to do any of this and people fawning over his great leadership and making favorable comparisons to Lincoln. That's how loving close we came to fascism and it was all avoided because Trump is incompetent

Things could have looked a lot worse if the actual fascist ideologues had more than a foothold. Because whilst they, (the fascist evil bastards), did get a few in, Trump will always prefer a sychophantic moron who will tell him what he wants to hear, (and all Trump ever wants to hear is "you are the bestest boy!") over a machiavellian weasel trying to push an agenda.

Inequality has always existed but poverty is a uniquely capitalist idea.

There is no poverty in tribal society because there is no concept of property. Everyone and everything is part of the tribe. A person that provides for the tribe is provided for by the tribe. Tribal societies were confused by the idea that in the white man's tribe there are impoverished peasants who farm land which they must pay for. Land ownership, wages, taxes, etc all sound to them like a complicated form of slavery.

There was a multi-thousand year stretch of human history between tribal societies and prevalent capitalism where the large majority of the world's population lived as feudal serfs or slaves. They might take some offense to being told that society will provide for their needs.

Overcompensation for a thin, misshapen dick. Everything is overcompensation and baldly obvious that it always, always comes from a place of deep, inescapable worry that he'll be exposed for being the thin-skinned, talentless boor that he really is. So everything he does is about trying to put out an image of being the big, strong, successful rich man, when he's literally the exact opposite of those things, and anyone that is one of them instantly sees through the feeble attempts.

It's why we laugh and point at him signing everything in Sharpie like this:

Believe me, I'm more than aware of how bad it could have been if anyone he surrounded himself was actually shrewd or competent, but at least a few of them enriched themselves greatly and did lasting damage to multiple parts of our country purely out of blind avarice. It was still bad, just sort of the least bad it could have been because they were all awful people and, most of the time, the least qualified person possible.

Because, again, Trump has the complete opposite of "the best people."

Always remember that the former President was dumber than the dumbest person you've ever met by a wide margin

Republicans are testing messaging around "Biden failed on Covid" but it's not clicking because they've also backed the "no restrictions, ever, because covid isn't a big deal!" train for so long that it's the official Republican position.

Yeah they'll still get some people to go along with it, but they have absolutely no coherent message on covid.
