That's awesome. There's an annual Christmas music thread going that will happily take any and all musical contributions if you're into that.

For folks wondering, this is a Buick Reatta. I can confirm from experience that both screens still worked and the touchscreen interface was still as functional 25+ years later.

The parts I needed for giving the Plus/4 some preventative maintenance came in the past couple of days.

This included power adapters so I can use my newer C64 PSU with the Plus/4 (thanks Commodore for using different power connectors), a 9 pin to mini DIN joystick connector (thanks Commodore for using a different connector for joysticks on the 264 series of 8 bit computers), and heat sinks for the TED and CPU.

First off need to start with the Plus/4 itself

And remove that stupid RF shielding around the TED chip

Cleaned chips down with isopropyl alcohol. I have since been told that I need to make the copper "heat sink" for the PLA chip bigger. Easy done, got plenty of copper sheet.

All works, no smoke

Games and demos load up fine from my SD2IEC unit. The joystick converter works perfectly with my usual Amiga/Atari/C64 joystick.

Next up will be finishing off the Pi1541 for the 8 bit Commodores I have

Look at this weird old thing that came across my desk!

It’s a medical device, clearly, powering it on reveals a logo

But wait, what’s this? It’s a PC!

A PIII-400 to be exact, with 256mb of ram

And it runs NT4 :chloe:

That screen is a touchscreen, turns out, and it gets locked into this program. I was able to hit ctrl alt delete and get to task manager, but whatever user this is running as doesn’t have the rights to kill this program. I was able to start explorer.exe and snoop around the drive a bit though

It turns out this is a video and image capture device for medical imaging machines, so it takes images and video in and burns them to CD

I think next up I’ll pull it apart and put an SSD to IDE adapter in there and see what sort of OS I can get it to run. Hopefully the touchscreen presents as a regular serial mouse, it would be neat to have it work.

Anyone have any ideas on breaking out of the NT4 jail I’m in? It has to be somewhat easy to bypass security on NT4 I’d think?

XP should run on that thing no problem. There's no "security" to break on NT. You can just format and go right from XP setup. There are a LOT of embedded devices with various versions of XP. In many cases XP will pick up the touch screen with no driver at all.

You'll want to replace the CMOS battery while you're in there.

Why not put a supported Linux on it so you can expose it to the internet?

He wants to run old (presumably Windows) software on it.

"Exposing" it to the Internet isn't such a big deal these days because you'll typically have a router between the computer and the Internet, so people can't just reach out and touch you.

However I'd be pretty careful about browsing the Web, because I'm pretty sure it's been years since Firefox updated for XP, and god knows what you're opening yourself up to.

A couple years ago I'd have said just run mIRC to get on goon IRC channels, but discord has completely eaten all such things.

I definitely keep my PII Win98SE computer off my network. There is no way in hell it is getting close to it. With USB, there's no real need for it to be on the network. All games back then don't need the always connected to the Internet stuff that newer games need these days

Also the likelihood that the malware will even run on systems that old. Or get a web browser that supports modern security or JavaScript.

Windows XP and maybe 2000 have enough compatibility that I would be cautious depending on what your doing, but it’s not like you probably want to do your banking on them.

But, drat it, it makes me wanna circle back and actually work on my proxy idea, where you connect these computers to a proxy and feed it formatted sites made for them. One day.

Some years ago I got light-headed from the joy of finding an adapter cable for the PCMCIA network adapter in my Windows 95 laptop after looking for one for several years, and just connected the fucker right into my modem, and I can't be sure but I don't think anything bad happened. Nothing good also happened as any site with a jay pej was too much for the poor thing to load.

(I was looking at a bin'o'cables at a recycling centre and saw what I thought "hey that might be what I'm missing", bought it for five loving euros and hey it was the right adapter!)

the main reason to network an old windows machine is to let it share its drives so you can easily copy software onto it

windows 10 disabled SMB1 and doesn't want to talk to old computers by default but you can enable it if you want
https://www.tenforums.com/network-sharing/169447-problem-connecting-windows-10-pro-windows-98-a.html

just make sure you don't expose your passwordless smb1 share over the internet!
most home internet connections use internal IPs behind a router and NAT through a single public IP so you should usually be safe.
