1. I understand an article like this but I still want to know if the manufacturing company pockets the surcharge or the retailer that actually sells the graphics cards. Nvidia and AMD name MSRP's, so I guess they sell the cards at those regular prices to the retailers (or they would not have those MSRP's)? That would mean every single retailer in the world is taking liberty to inflate the prices themselves because they can. Is that right? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

2. There is a house in our street where you can hear a "deep deep" sound every second or so (not always). Two older people live there. I am not sure I want to breach the subject, so I'm asking here. What is the most likely medical device that would make a regular sound you'd have in your home? Thanks.

That's about right. The distributors and big retailers who order direct are the ones who take the hit for shipping and tariffs. Delays aside, the cost of sending a single shipping container from China to X country has tripled (at a minimum). So retailers are inflating prices to adjust for the increased cost of goods sold, as well as increased demand.

This is the latest article about shipping I can find: https://www.economist.com/business/a-return-to-container-shippings-pre-pandemic-days-is-a-long-way-off/21806844

E: one thing the article doesn't mention is that the big shipping companies are investing massively in new ships to adjust for the increased demand, and incoming environmental regulations mean that those ships will be more expensive to build, at least for a little while. So shipping prices are probably going to remain high for quite some time.

This is not a stupid question by any means, supply chains are kinda complicated and dumb at the best of times.

E2: the article does mention it :downs:

The fact that the new year is just like a week and a half after the solstice makes me think they were trying to hit the solstice and got it slightly wrong. It makes a lot of sense that you would mark your new year at the solstice, and why else would they be so close? I know the evolution of calendars is actually really complicated, and that other calendars have other new years dates, but I'm wondering about this in particular with regards to our (gregorian) calendar. Is my guess right?

iirc yes, but kinda. The Roman calendar before Caesar's reforms (the Julian calendar) was not a constant fixed thing, and the first January 1 of the new calendar was specifically chosen for its alignment with the solar year... I think that means the solstice but can't confirm. But also: 1) the solstice moves (I think it's four days earlier now than it was then) and 2) the calendar we use (the Gregorian calendar) is 10 days ahead of the Julian

so many people hated 2020 and 2021 that i wonder if we could try a new, more democratic calendar. we give 2022 a week and if everyone agrees that it sucks after 7 days we vote to move on and then it's jan 1st 2023. keep repeating until we hit a good year

The Roman calendar used to have a ten months with March as the first month and “winter” just taking up what we call January and February. Kind of like that idea. But also means that the New Year being anywhere near the winter solstice is pretty random historical chance.

I was chatting with my Chinese neighbour the other day and she mentioned how she's n+1 years old in China because they do ages strangely over there. I asked if the n+1 stuff was because of lunar / gregorian new year and she said she had no idea / nor really any idea how it worked.

Guess my question is, what is up with the way they do ages in China? Seems easier to just roll with ages being based around a calendar instead of people being 25+1 or what ever years old and not just 25 or 26.

I thought it was that they start counting at 1 when you are born, as in you are in your first year, whereas in the US we begin counting at 0, as in you have not lived a full year yet.

Wouldn't that just make you 'n' years old though. She specifically mentioned that she is "n plus one" year old. Not the result of the equation but actually saying the "plus one" part. And that not everyone is "plus one" some are just a simple number.

There are two different things going on here. The first is that traditional ages in China do work differently.

The other is I think you are misunderstanding the meaning of the English/math phrase "n plus one"; I think she just meant that (for most of the year, or maybe at that specific time of year), whatever number her age is in the US (e.g. 27), her age would be called the number one higher in China (e.g. 28).

Just going to casually mention the Islamic lunar calendar, which is based on the moon instead of the sun, which doesn't line up. So the months move through the seasons by some days a year. Eventually, that means that a birthday counted by the lunar calendar would be a year ahead of a solar calendar. But I can't remember if it's hundreds or tens of years before that happens.

To throw some anecdotal knowledge into the pile here, I do remember learning about this as a kid from my uncle (a legit Buddhist priest); when we celebrated Chinese New Year he mentioned our age is typically counted as about a year at birth. I'm guessing the rationale has something to do with just counting the gestation period itself but that was how I justified it in my little ten year old brain

About 31 years, a lunar year is 11 or 12 days shorter than a solar year

Probably a similar version to why they used to offer shorter versions of their full videos - give you a taste, see if you like it, and if so, here's where more is. I don't know if pornhub works like youtube in that if you have a certain number of subscribers/likes you get paid for just being there, and then that increases based on number of clicks/views. Maybe it's to entice more clicks in general.

Cæsar’s goal was indeed to have the winter solstice start the year.

The reason it’s not there now is because the Romans implemented it wrong, adding leap years every third year, rather than having three common years before a leap year. If you have several February leap years when you shouldn’t, the calendar date falls behind the “real” (tropical) year, as it relates to the seasons.

Further complicating matters, the Gregorian reform returned the calendar not to the correspondence between seasons that it had at the time of Cæsar, but to the correspondence it had at the time of the First Council of Niceæ in A.D. 325, when the date of Easter was established.
