Wait so its down to possibly hundreds of thousands of Uygurs and "other" Muslims now? I thought it was millions.

Xinjiang has a population of 25million, Texas with a population of 29 million currently has 150,000 people incarcerated. That's also hundreds of thousands.

Really speaks to how alienated anyone with decision making power at Tesla is that they thought a Xinjiang dealership was a good idea.

Lol like capitalists would allow the threat of bad PR to dissuade them from accessing new markets. Even if they did believe a genocide is occurring why would that stop them? It didn't stop IBM in the 30s.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ this too

Tesla had been making inroads with the PRC for years now. At some point they were looking for exclusive contracts to produce electric vehicles and their proprietary batteries there, so this is nothing new. Tesla didn't change, the political landscape did.

they're just going to get some kind of special certification from the state department or whatever proxy NGOs "certifying" they don't use slave labor or detainee labor or something else and basically be bulletproof anyway

It'd be simple enough to sell Teslas in Xinjiang through a subdivision or a partner - but that's probably too much effort.

Honestly I think it's smart of Musk for signing off on a dealership and going into China with the Tesla brand undiluted. He's also a control freak which is driving that decision more than anything else tho.

also, I meant the projection outperforms America 2x per capita. The absolute worst estimates the Economist can throw up are still twice as good as US's mortality rate. According to the Economist if we followed China's zero covid policies there'd still be 500,000 Americans alive today.

There's also a 1488% chance that Texas imprisons more people due to their race or ethnicity than China ever has.

China could potentially have raised the dead from Covid.

Some countries, like Australia, reduced the annual death total because they had fewer deaths from influenza and very few covid deaths. The Economist got that data from Australia by looking at all their death certificates for the past seven years. For China, they got the data with a sophisticated AI using the reliable algorithm of "guessing"

the economist has a separate article on their methodology. for china, they have almost no data so it's all proxy estimates. they only have 12 weeks of data on excess mortality across the country starting the first week of 2020 as well as the reported covid death toll during that time. they assume the excess mortality over reported death toll during that time is representative. they then estimate how much covid is actually spreading in china by using another proxy. they use mobile phone data to see how much travel people in china have been doing during the pandemic and compare that to 78 countries in other countries lots of travel by the populace is associated with lots of covid spread across the country, boosting the number of infections happening due to china's urbanization rate, boosting it further because they say that the more authoritarian a country is the higher the spread, boosting it further because they say china's healthcare quality is low, then they cut it down a little bit based on age demographics, and finally cut it down a little bit more because of low tourism during the pandemic.

obviously there are lots of easily noticeable flaws in that methodology.

My only big complaint about the movie is the Peng Tzedong subplot, which contributes absolutely nothing to the overall plot. I get why it's in there, to emphasize Mao's own personal willingness to make a sacrifice on his initiative. But you could cut out all of those scenes, and Mao looking pensive, and it would be a much tighter movie when it's already reaching close to 3 hours long.

Counterpoint: the scenes are necessary to confirm that Mao Anying was a map gamer

yeah this is what I meant - if you applied this methodology to just about every other country on earth, you might land on a reasonably accurate number, just because nobody else treats COVID quite like China does

but it doesn't, so it doesn't
