this doesn't smell like a colour revolution to me. there's no airbrushed opposition candidate to call for elections, actual ferocious violence and very spotty news coverage. i'd guess that this is a genuine insurrection in an Enemy Country so the NYT et al are sort of opportunistically supporting it

American's decaying intelligence apparatus still has all the resources in the world but lost their ability to win reliable power in puppet governments. Or, at least, they no longer have the capacity to look more than a couple years in advance, since global influence is falling apart yesterday. Their backs are against the wall. A color revolution would require agents, ideological programming, influence peddling, promised deals, all the while navigating between the Russian and Chinese intelligence. Too much work, not enough time, and no guarantee this political movement you helped create will keep their promises and stay allied with you. So instead, just arm and send money to all the freaks that will sow chaos and destabilize the region.

I mean we knew it too. People just started making and selling cloth masks on their own because it was literally all we could do, and then when they got popular, the spread seemed to slow so considering that they worked, everyone started acting like they were real PPE.
