Zulily Zoetrope posted:Pretty much every single NFT billed as a five+-figure sum is an outright lie, a pump-and-dump scheme, or a vehicle for money-laundering. A handful of grifters are gonna make off with the life savings of a bunch of morons, and another bunch are "suddenly" going to earn a bunch of money they had already made off the books. No one who thinks this is legit is gonna make a dime. Yeah, it's like saying an average Joe can get rich by getting into the Andy Warhol painting trading game. Same as it ever was: a place for rich fucks to park and hide their money.

Stexils posted:seriously, does this poo poo sound like something you want to deal with? No, which is more or less what I was expecting. My understanding of Bitcoin is that you can maybe turn it into real money if you give it to the Winklevoss twins or something, Eth seems even sketchier than that and NFTs even worse. The person I'm talking isn't an NFT evangelist or anything, I think he's just another person who vaguely thinks they might be the next big thing without really understanding why. If there's any opportunity to get paid with real money instead I'll certainly go with that option, just not sure if that's on the table. It's a case where I've been doing a thing for like 10 years with nobody caring and suddenly someone offers me a Quest 2 and an NFT to make another one. I was already going to do that so sure, maybe? If it's not worth negative money? Don't know how much it costs to list on an auction site but if it's more than like $50 I'll probably just forget about it.

Some bitcoiner was trying to say HOLD! ("don't sell") and typoed. Now it's a meme. Simple enough.

it literally just means "hold", someone made a typo years ago and bitcoiners have considered it peak comedy ever since

Part of the problem of Crypto is that it is hard to effectively cash out. Like, I can buy a bunch of drugs I have to sell. But that's more of an obligation. What I can effectively do with Crypto is buy different Crypto (NFTs inclusive) which, by the nature of the Crypto bubble, becomes more Crypto (unless it doesn't). If you have other lines of credit, you can leverage that. Because while all money is a fake abstraction, Crypto is much closer to high end financial abstractions than cash. It's like fashion. Being dialed in to social trends is a signifier for wealth. So, you can flip that and get wealthy just by signifying wealth. Except that you can't, it's just wealthy people passing wealth around and the people who make it work are absolutely connected.

thecluckmeme posted:I'll posit this: this guy wants to pay you with an NFT, that must be converted to ethereum, then to cash in an exchange, then to your bank account. If he refuses to offer payment in any other way, even taking one layer of this abstraction away, that dude is absolutely loving laundering money Ethereum is *maybe* an ok way to get paid, in the same way Bitcoin is, in that it's reasonably liquid and there are ways to cash it out. Still I'd discount it pretty heavily.

Hyperlynx posted:The thing is, having no land borders Australia could probably have avoided the whole mess altogether by building dedicated quarantine facilities for all travelers. But immigration quarantine is the responsibility of the federal government, and the current prime minister has a strict policy of "do absolutely nothing whatsoever". If it was a Malaysian family on a boat, though, then Morrison would personally ensure a course of action that would make Priti Patel look like a bleeding-heart liberal.
