The rampant loving and throwing toilet seats at each other is already here and it absolutely rules, and if they kept that in then I'd be a lot more likely to do my shopping in VR, even if I have to refill my shopping cart ten times over because someone keeps clipping it out of bounds or stacking it with dancing penises until the server crashes.

That metaverse Walmart thing is a tech demo from 2017 lmao https://www.theverge.com/tldr/2022/1/5/22868323/walmart-metaverse-shopping-video-viral-old VR in general is pretty fun though. There's an app on steam that emulates $30K professional DJ equipment super well for like $20 and it's a lot of fun to mess around with. And VRChat is great for going and people watching

Given that it's run by marc andressen and he has a big sycophant squad there, and marca is all in on crypto bullshit to the point where he posts idiot memes about it on twitter all day, hacker news used to be the reliable place to get "blockchain will run everything" idiots at the top of every comment thread. If goddamn hacker news is starting to turn on buttcoin, that's pretty encouraging.

By way of comparison, some research recently found that 80% of anti vaccine claims found on social media could be traced to 12 human beings through a variety of intermediaries and platforms. But the number of people recycling, rehashing, and resharing those claims were in the millions. The architecture of the modern web is designed to create self-sustaining, forever expanding bubbles of engagement. As long as there's a motivated core nucleus of people who profit by pushing that bubble actively, ferociously, and dishonestly, it can go on, and takes a thousand times the effort to fight as to create. Not because, as was so popular to say a few years ago, because of "filter bubbles" but because there's always going to be a receptive audience to sufficiently appealing lies. And for some things there's always going to be sufficiently motivated liars for some things. And now there's perfect tools to connect them

I had the PSVR for a while and Drunkn Bar Fight was the best for showing it off to newbies. I also really enjoyed Super Hot VR, the matrix-style bullet time dodging and shooting just feels so good. Some of the creativity apps look utterly incredible and useful for various content creators and if I was 10 years younger I'd be right into that poo poo. I think VR also has a whole lot of potential as a workspace for therapeutic applications but lol if the combined forces of facebook, pharmabros and patent trolls (but I repeat myself) don't absolutely gently caress that up for humanity. Unfortunately I had to sell the VR because after re-arranging the house to make room for our kid I just didn't have the right setup to enjoy it. I'm not interested in getting a gaming rig for a pc-based VR, and phone-based VR just doesn't have the right apps to make it worthwhile. I'd settle for a standalone Oculus except there's no way in hell I'll knowingly engage with facebook, gently caress them forever. Maybe when the kid is old enough to use VR properly I'll use that as an excuse to get back into it, I just hope I can teach them to avoid the digital crack skinner box garbage that so much "gaming" has become.
