Like, the suburbs they've spent the past few decades in weren't good enough. They need new suburbs to spend a few years in before they die. But anyway yeah young people are on board with cities and anti-car in theory, but it's another story to get them to walk the walk. It's still really hard for most people to live so at odds with how auto-centric everything is.

i dunno. i've seen people arguing that we shouldn't bother with investing in public transit/cycling/mode shift away from cars because soon we'll all be summoning self driving teslas whenever we need to go somewhere. it's one of the more infuriating variants of musk brain because putting aside the fact that a world with self driving cars would still have all the same issues as our current car dependent world, self driving cars don't exist! and they won't ever exist! it's loving vaporware!

That laughable infrastructure bill gives almost nothing to transit as well which pretty much much means nothing is going to seriously change for the next 10-15 years+ (considering US planning). (In Portland, the big play that is going to solve the city’s traffic wires is adding a single lane to an interchange and even then it is a complete mess that will probably make a middle school completely unusable.) The US will be even more of a car hell than it was. correct. bart ridership (ostensibly one of the better ones in america) is 33% of normal, that is, for the month of Dec 2021 vs 2018 we had 8.8 million rides and it's down to 2.6 million rides. it doesn't seem unreasonable to presume a significant portion of that differential is now taken up by millions of car rides instead. it's actually worse because the only ones still used are very short haul, all the suburban ones (i.e. walnut creek) are down to about 20% of normal. avg weekday of 6300 down to 1400. caltrain is even far worse, it's down to like 5%-10% of normal; i work on a construction site next to some tracks and i'll regularly just see entirely empty trains fly by with maybe 1 head in the window. and it's not a service problem, although cuts are going to happen soon also lots of people then went out and bought used or new cars so now they have cars e: lol  for the record, i do not blame people for not taking transit during a pandemic, especially when remaining riders think covid is a 5g hoax by billy gates and masks are poison. such is life afterall. but yes it's going to be hurting bad considering already relatively low usage. the fiscal budget is a real lol considering how tight it was to begin with Xaris has issued a correction as of 00:38 on Jan 8, 2022 |

Yeah, it is expected during a pandemic, at the same time the American obsession with farebox returns is going to really start to bite. Eventually most ridership will return but before then there is going to a crisis across transit agencies unless they get more state/federal support (which means more cars). It is less of an issue is other places since it is considered a public service rather than having to be “self supporting.”
