Not quite. Musk's real importance lies in the fact that he was the first engineer to present a world in which class and wealth mattered, some characters were poor, some were rich, and not owning an electric car was a hardship, not just a cheery sentimental thing in the scenery.

Is he actually an engineer though, or does he just buy other people's businesses and let others do the work? I'm legit asking, I don't know what his credentials are beyond owning all the chaos emeralds.

Like with Rowling and author, he's a children's fantasy engineer.

He's a programmer who co-founded a company during the dot com bubble, that was bought out just before the bubble burst. Then he bought into Paypal, but was forced out of it after loving with the owners, then joined Telsa and forced the owners out of that. Pity that a shithead got so far from the dot com bubble, when it went I couldn't find a job for six years as graduated 2000. Edit: As for your question, he's as much an engineer now as PT Barnum is a quantum temporal warp theorist. Watch a presentation of him showing off his latest grift. Especially the cybertruck one. Btw, solar roofs, thats a Telsa project everyone forgot. happyhippy fucked around with this message at 17:48 on Jan 8, 2022 |

The thing to remember about "anyone can become a billionaire if they work for it" is that the emphasis is on anyone, not anyone. Musk is where he is through a delicate balance of privilege, luck, and being a total oval office.

His undergrad degree is in economics and physics. He started a Physics and Material Sciences PhD at Stanford but dropped out after a few days to write bad code for Zip2. By his own admission, most of his actual input into 'his' products is as a designer - what he called "aesthetics and look-and-feel things". When you're the boss you get to tell actual engineers to replace all the switches in your car with a giant touchscreen or that it must have gull-wing doors like the car you doodled when you were a kid, but that's not engineering.

It's amazing though that he spent millions in public money to try and gently caress up making a train only to fall short and gently caress up making a road.

I think if he does that we very clearly will not have to go to war with them, because they will blow themselves up. Either fighting or because the space teslas all went on fire.

Also "nah, there's no chance his daughter knew what he was like as a person, so you should trust my opinion as a journalist".

One thing about Musk is that he kept making risky bets that paid off, right from starting his own business, through investing in paypal and ebay to investing and becoming chairman of 2 pretty crazy startups (Tesla and SpaceX) and somehow managing to come out ahead. There's an interesting CNBC interview/documentary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eblPwXFb7TE) with the original Tesla founders which includes their views on Musk - not completely positive since they were forced out and all that, but they don't go into much detail because of settlements - and based on how they describe things he gave them money at a time when they really had nothing but an idea of what to make, they even admit they were surprised what all they needed to get production ready cars. e: Also they say a lot of the early knowhow came from UK Lotus which I thought was pretty interesting.
