We've found a new, softer version of Mike Kurtz – someone who tweets a lot and has silly things to say but seems to be generally harmless and not a piece of poo poo.

I hope he has a dark secret, as well.

pretty fucking embarrassing to watch

forkboy84 posted:

Inokiism is unfairly maligned. It outworking its welcome, but Don Frye, Bas Rutten, Brian Johnson, were all funa additions to NJPW. Honestly, it's taken as a truth than Inokiism was rotten to watch but I reckon it's past time to re-evaluate it.

Aesthetically I mean. Business wise it had disastrous effects on the 3rd generation talent. Kojima left, Sasaki left, Nagata got hurt bad by the perception of his losses, and the company as a whole got hurt by poo poo like Tadao Yasuda winning the IWGP belt.

But it absolutely wasn't all bad.

The other thing is that it’s not like anyone else was doing a whole lot better. NOAH had a few hot periods but the next generation (KENTA, Marufuji, Morishima, Rikio etc) never could replace the old guard as top draws so they had to keep on going back to Misawa and Kobashi until they could no longer; All Japan had flashes but nothing consistent; Joshi was well and truly in the shitter and would remain there for years; and the various splitter promotions generally had a brief run as the new big thing before declining and either folding or becoming modern Zero-1. The two places that managed to achieve some sort of growth in this period were Dragon Gate and DDT: both of which tried to do something completely different, both of which attracted a completely different fan base and in the case of the former became the model that everyone would follow going forward.

People tend to ignore wider factors when looking at these things: throughout the 2000s the Japanese economy was really struggling (deflation and stagnation your two main issues); the MMA boom dramatically impacted pro wrestling because the two were a lot more overlapped there than they were in the US; and also while all of the companies did very well in the 90s that’s when the main two both lost prime time TV and that may have made it harder to get a new generation, who’d begin to have money to spend, into wrestling. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the New Japan boom coincided with a period where the economy was doing better and was after MMA had declined: and while it wasn’t an inevitably and NJPW had to work hard to build (it’s not like everyone else went up as much if at all in that period) it certainly helped.

One thing that Inokiism accidentally contributed that I think helped was that you had a lot of departures and it meant that afterwards they had to go for the next generation as their big push - while they absolutely brought in vets that left and even others it’s forced them to stick with Tanahashi and Nakamura when things carried on going down after Inoki left (fun fact: business bottomed out in 2009, because building up the next generation cost them more older fans than new ones in the early years) rather than doing what NOAH did and just going back to Misawa repeatedly.

It makes sense that people like Inokiist matches and its emphasis on athleticism and intensity, but it did prove once and for all that focusing on those two qualities is a poor promotional strategy.

UWF rules, Bloodsports and Pure rules matches and shows have their place but they almost completely fail to bring crowds back at a level to sustain a promotion.

It's theatricality, characters and storytelling that makes people come back to wrestling time and time again. Just look at how many more hardcore/deathmatch focused promotions have managed to survive where no strictly "sports"-style promotion has managed to.

He desperately wants Tony to notice him so much, he thought he had it when he did a skit on youtube about Tony Khan berating him and calling him the N word.

Yeah it's a cold meat and cheese selection from a supermarket with a branded cheese board, let's not act like it's anything more than it is.

I remember the first ever Puro dvds I got were Indy Summit 2006 and WrestleExpo 2006. Both were real fun, had to watch them on my own because one had Fluro Light Tube death matches and Danshoku Dino. Some times it's all about getting off on the right foot.

I somehow copied a video of Bob Sapp hatching out of a giant egg at a lab party. That's the best way to discover Puro.

this, but at the risk of belabouring the obvious, you can have both theatricality and intense athleticism in any given wrestling match. I do wish I could find a copy of Nagata/Murakami from December 2002 on here, because not only is it intense as gently caress, Nagata is as beautifully theatrical as someone like Mutoh before him and Tanahashi after him. That happy medium is one of the best things about wrestling.
