I read a longform article about oxycontin, and I remember a major element in why it caused such a massive addiction crisis was that it was marketed as a 12 hour painkiller, when every other pill of the same type was max 8 hours. So people could be prescribed 2 per day and get full pain-relief.

Except it is not a 12 hour pill - it's an 8 hour one that occasionally, in some people lasts a bit longer. So people were splitting their pills, taking more than they were prescribed per day etc. just to try to get the effect that the pill was supposed to deliver, and also not go into daily withdrawal, so they'd run out before they could refill the prescription, which leads on to lying to doctors/forging prescriptions, and then smoothly on to buying Oxy from dealers, and onwards to cheaper street opiates.

fake edit: not sure if this is the one I remember, but it covers the same issues: https://www.latimes.com/projects/oxycontin-part1/

The opioid epidemic started because pills were handed out like candy for several years, thanks in part to the Sackler family pushing them on doctors and dentists and pushing the myth that Oxycontin isn't addictive. They were too freely prescribed for everything and the prescribed dosages were addictive/dependent levels. People took the recommended doses of the prescription painkiller they were given for like getting their wisdom teeth removed, and became addicted

this is true but old news. when people talk about the current opioid epidemic, as a problem, they're mostly talking about people overdosing and stealing to afford heroin

the opioid epidemic is not "a lot of people are taking pills that they were prescribed". that is definitely a part of how it started, but that's not the current problem. the current problem is fentanyl, fake pills, crime, overdoses... not overprescribing.

doctors haven't been overprescribing for a while now. even if you have legit pain it's now pretty hard to get "the good stuff"

the TL and the DR is that overprescribing led to an overcorrection and now opiates are UNDER-prescribed and that is itself a new problem

Interesting.
This mirrors my experience after having all 4 of my wisdom teeth out. I was told to take two a day, but I remember waking up in the middle of the night and having to take another.

This was also post opioid scare, so they only gave me a three day supply which was gone in two. It was almost impossible to get refilled even though I felt like I had a legitimate reason. I was in so much pain I could barely make it in to the dentists office to be seen again.

I stumbled ass-backwards into a comfortable, easy life for reasons beyond my comprehension and now I think I'm better than you for it.
My dentist used to give me Ativan before I got in the chair and 30 Tylenol 3s (codeine) everytime I got work done. Iirc I got 30 percocets for a root canal once, and had it renewed over the phone when I ran out in 4 days.

I used to love going to the dentist, but it was very wrong in retrospect.

I can see when you are lying.

Here's the thing about opioids: they dull pain, significantly. They also dull everything else. So that lovely job you have, or the squalor you live in, or the everyday bullshit you have to live through, or the sadness of your friends of family being suck or dying - all that gets dulled. For a lot of people, opioids just make life a hell of a lot easier to deal with. Plus you get the added bonus of a little euphoria. And when you live in an arch-capitalist hellhole that eats away at your soul even if you're wealthy, it's easy to really like getting ahold of some opioids.

Now, couple that with opioids being extremely addictive, and now you'd got a problem.

How do you think those people got to this point

They started on oxy and it kicked their tolerance up too high and the next best alternates were things like heroin, fentanyl, morphine

What are you even arguing

I sprained my ankle way back before there were strict rules around opioids and the doc prescribed me like a month's worth of codeine for it. ...I was fine after a few days.
I count myself lucky that all it did was make me sick and barf the first time I took it so I never took the rest. Turns out I'm allergic to that stuff. The neighbor kid though? He got hooked on that poo poo after he broke his leg in high school and his life has been one trainwreck after another ever since. Dude just never had a chance once he got a taste of that poo poo. It's sad as hell going home to visit my folks because while the rest of the neighborhood kids grew up and moved on he's still living with his parents and can't hold a job because of drugs and he's got a record from stealing to feed his addiction.

That said having a solid lol that the psychologist self help book guy and alt-right star not only specialized in addiction and talked down to addicts constantly and should have known better but still got himself hooked on benzos before going and checking himself into a former-Soviet state's coma spa center and his fans still worship him.

Like the sheer audacity of, "I see all these people falling into this woodchipper and getting mangled. Surely I'll be fine if I dip my toes in." Lol.

I relate to this. I broke my collarbone a couple of years back, which is apparently one of the if not the most painful bones to break in your body. I was in unbearable pain for weeks, and got prescribed a giant box of Codeine pills. I was terrified of the stuff but at the same time not taking them really wasn't an option. I had to wake up twice every night to eat more pills just to sleep through the night for a couple of weeks.

I was so, so relieved when I realized after a few days that I was sick of being high on codeine all day.

I went back in to see the surgeon who bolted me back together for a checkup, and when I was leaving he told me he'd prescribe me more painkillers without being prompted - I told him I really didn't need any more, at this point I was less than halfway through the giant box of Codeine he got me initially and I needed less every day - And he just kind of raised his eyebrow at me like I was mad, and asked me if I was really sure.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that if the random chance of genetics and brain wiring had set my brain up in such a way to be vulnerable to opioid addiction this would have ruined my life.

I still have a bunch of these pills, they're a killer hangover cure.

Clubs are designed to suck paychecks out of newly minted young professionals who want to feel cool or classy. Most people grow out of it pretty quick but some folks like that scene

Its not for me really but I like dance/electronic music and occasionally end up in clubs.

I ended up in a private booth/VIP recently and the couches were comfy and the drinks were free so that was fun.

The reaction here seems disproportionate. All non-prescription opioids are now banned in Australia, ostensibly to prevent an epidemic but the situation here was never as bad as in the US. When I last had the flu I asked a doc to just prescribe me the same medications that were in the old otc medicine. They told me it's doesn't work (it certainly did work) and it's not allowed so I'll just have to suffer, and offered no other options. If I get any severe pain such as when I've pulled a muscle I have to wait for an appointment and even then the prescription is now for 2 day's worth at most, whereas one used to get a week's worth (which I'd save for the next time I or someone close needs them).

Last time I needed opioids was last year, for the most painful sore throat I've had since childhood to the point I couldn't eat (even after otc analgesics) and had to force myself to stay hydrated. I couldn't get an appointment the same day symptoms worsened and of course I had to wait an extra day for covid testing as well. It was absolute poo poo knowing that better options used to be available made me even more miserable. I miss being able to get what I need when I need it but there's no chance in hell of ever reverting the changes because the drug war hysteria runs deep. Medicinal cannabis is finally a thing but only under strict conditions (it varies from state to state but I hear it's now available for chronic illnesses that don't respond to other treatments, under medical supervision from a physician with appropriate licensing) and it's still strictly policed.

So personally it's been inconvenient and painful to not have otc low dose codeine for illness. But for chronic pain sufferers it can become virtually impossible to obtain the necessary opioids for treatment. iirc Russia is one of the worst countries for blocking access to analgesics for chronic pain.

Meanwhile drug abusers still have no problem sourcing, though street opioids are getting increasingly dangerous to use. The public perception is that's a feature not a bug and it's not taken seriously, right up until someone they know ODs.

While drugs need to be regulated the way it's done here is paternalistic bullshit, so you know jorp would approve.
