They advertised it like crazy so unless something happened literally a day or two ago I have to imagine it's just Adult Swim doing a little fun stunt. I hope so at least. I checked out after 3 episodes so that I wouldn't burn out on it. Good show and I love the variety in animation and art.

I kind of like the show okay, but I do wish Jameela Jamil's character would come back. I also kind of like Blossum.

I love how Smiling Friends is a vehicle for Zach and Michael to utilize old ideas they had workshopped years prior into fully fleshed out animation.

Of course the nursing baby from the pilot, but also the whole Halloween episode thing was clearly based off Zach's old idea of a mom feeding her kids a monkey like a pizza where they rip it to pieces really fast while eating it alive

I love this show so much. Just unhinged in a great way

yeah. it has lots and lots and lots of oneyplays jokes from the hammer jokes to homuculus and other weird poo poo. it also reminds me alot of Aqua teen too which is nice. as much as i like stuff that has a throughline and character development along with weird edgy humor mixed with heart and poo poo(the various vivzipop stuff and old simspsons and rick and morty and etc) i do like just weird hosed up shows with lots and lots of jokes hitting all at once.

I liked it a lot but I saw the name Harry Partridge in the voice cast which I assume is the animator. I think I remember I tried to avoid his stuff recently for some reason, like he got cancelled for something? I can't remember what. I remember I just didn't really like his animations on YouTube in general.
Also, they covered some topics in the show that made me laugh but also think "are they just goofing around or do they have some chuddy beliefs?" Like, it was veering into a little South Park anti-censorship stuff for a bit.

The main one early on is the Mr. Frog one where he gets cancelled. At least the main storyline shows that Mr. Frog is actually a bad dude, so it wasn't really a mistake to take him off the air, but they also toss in the TV executive who wants to tone down all the content because it's too "toxic" and eventually results in something that isn't funny. The argument that you have to be edgy or intentionally piss people off to be funny is kind of a fallacy like the whole concept of "cancel culture" in general.

I mean you can’t tell me The Simpsons isn’t a great example of a show over-correcting its subversive or underground comedy until it retains not a trace of what made the show funny in the first place, it’s not like that is something has literally never happened. Feels a bit reactionary to immediately leap to the CHUD conclusion, IMO.

The blackface joke at the end of the Halloween episode kinda reinforced the idea, though. It seemed to reveal more of a mentality behind the show instead of just a couple jokes here and there.
I still really enjoyed it, but it made me feel like I was laughing along with the wrong people for the wrong reasons at times.

yeah that was my feel. it feels like a bit of a "this is what folks in show buensess deal with with some micro managing executive types who thinks he is a writer".

i kinda liked that joke simply because it was such a weird swerve at the very end and because it payed off on a joke earlier. its also a redone bit of some joke zack made about someone pulling a animal apart like a pizza. i get your point though. that being said. i dont think there is some secret chud malice behind it. its just because most of the writers are weird fucks from online and basicaly grew up on weird shithole sites and that rubs off on the humor for better or worse.

I haven’t seen it, is the joke literally “our character is doing blackface” or is it an It’s Always Sunny/Community style joke where the joke is “it is wrong to do Blackface and the comedy comes from the white characters not understanding that” because I see a ton of that online and it’s very confusing. Getting mad at a show for making fun of racists is weird, but if it’s really just like a “ha ha black people” joke then yeah gently caress that show lol

It’s a callback to an earlier joke largely about how people who wear face paint at Halloween tend to get in trouble down the line; up and down a Trudeau gag. The implementation itself seems like a criticism of how cancel culture does lead to mob mentality, but also does have good results insofar as the killing of a literal demon. Idk, frankly it really seems like a “we have 30 seconds to wrap this up and I want to use that eaten alive thing” more so than a concentrated message.

E - Didn’t realize that dude was rotoscoped the first time through, I love that they just sort of do whatever as far as styles

I think it's also maybe based off their friend Jeff, when they made fun of him for an old Halloween photo of him as a child, dressed as a Smurf in blue paint. But the oddly dark paint + crappy 80's film made it look super unfortunate. They joked about putting it online to make him look like a bigot and get him cancelled

The Simpsons started out as subversive and counter-culture way back in the 90s, and it's not so much that it changed and mellowed, but that the entire rest of the world moved on while it stayed in the same place, so now there's a lot of weird archaic things baked into its DNA, and a lot of modern audiences don't realize it was even supposed to be subversive because the things it was subverting died off long enough ago that many writers don't even remember what was subversive.

So now it's just one of the oldest shows on television and the biggest adult cartoon, and often the writers just play safe perpetuating it as what they thought it always was, so when it has a dumb or bad idea, it's putting all that authority as a big show with a big place in pop culture behind it.

Nah, I don't think that is entirely the case. Characters used to have a little bit of depth, but now every character is incredibly one dimensional. Like Lisa used to be actually wrong some of the time, but now she is pretty much never wrong according to the showrunners. If you disagree with Lisa, you are supposed to be stupid.

Also, it absolutely worships every guest star that comes onto the show, and that only really started in season 10. Like the show might lightly make fun of someone, but most of the episode is dedicated to show how amazing and awesome the guest star is.

The Lisa thing more than anything has to do with the fact that her VA only voices Lisa(all the other main cast VA's voice at least a couple other characters besides their respective Simpson) but still gets paid the same as the others so to maximize the value they keep giving Lisa big A & B plots no matter how dumb they are*

*Which probably in turn has to do with the fact that they're often really half assed, it's on record that they often have to rewrite episodes cause they'll finish a script and then realize they had completely forgotten to include Lisa or Marge in it at all

It's funny because I almost want to refer to this show as Invader Zim for Grown Ups, but not entirely because he's in it. Something about it just makes me feel like if you were super in to Zim when it was on HB might be up your ally. It might have partially to do with both shows having a really distinct art style and aesthetic? I don't know. Though, hearing Horvitz shout profanities is pretty amazing and something I don't think I've heard from him. I also love hearing him sing shmoopy love songs about his wife :kimchi:

I guess what I was getting at was that the newer writers don't really remember what the Simpsons was subverting so they don't know the show was trying to be subversive with their references, so they end up just uncritically making references to be like the show they remembered when growing up and had no idea of what archaic things it was making fun of.

Although I guess the nadir of the Simpsons to me was when they were trying to make fun of college SJWs, making a bunch of obscure references that only the writers themselves would get because they all went to Ivy League colleges, somehow made Mr. Burns the one sane man of a scene, and also didn't really get how The Simpsons has had an influence on the pop culture view of nuclear power. It was very weird and very bad.
