polio is mild bro just a cold

quote:

Many people fully recover.[1] In those with muscle weakness, about 2 to 5 percent of children and 15 to 30 percent of adults die.[1] Up to 70 percent of those infected have no symptoms.[1] Another 25 percent of people have minor symptoms such as fever and a sore throat, and up to 5 percent have headache, neck stiffness, and pains in the arms and legs.[1][3] These people are usually back to normal within one or two weeks.[1]

the culture doesn't remember real polio, when people think of polio they are thinking of long polio

Why do you need a doctor or pharmacist order to buy an at home test for reimbursement?? You’re gonna make people pay co-pays to get that order?

Isn’t the point to just get the tests out there cheap or free so everyone can find I out if they’re sick and avoid other people to prevent the spread??

because that's how our government works.

The federal government's ability to act is constrained only to managing the flows of capital in our society.

Not only does Biden not want to just give people tests, our government functionally cannot do that.

Federalism sucks and if there's a tiny silver lining to all of this it's that hopefully this loving shambling corpse of a state collapses and we get something, anything, else.

if you are pro capital and want people working then:
- parents have to stay home to take care of sick kid
- parents then have to stay home after sick kid gets them sick

why refuse handing out n95s to everyone? they let people stay at work/in class and not get sick and therefore they can keep working instead of shutting down?

isnt it literally better for capital to not have this chain of events happen?

- 45 minutes on how the industry is changing structure economically
- nobody has mentioned passenger or crew safety at all
- the current speaker just discussed how china's zero Covid policy will be bad for aircraft sales through 2023

The recognition that relying on boosters every 4-6 months is unlikely to be healthy for the immune system or effective long term would in principle be a positive first step towards admitting that the vaccines-only mitigation strategy has failed or at the very least that the current generation of vaccines are inadequate. In practice, given the current messaging from health authorities, the boosters and mitigations are probably just going away altogether now that COVID is deemed mild.

Also have a sneaking suspicion that the under 5 year old pediatric vaccine EUA approval isn't going to happen in March/April as reported. There's no way the effectiveness measured in the clinical trials are going to reach the target given the trials overlapped with the arrival of Omicron. You might say that of course it'll get an EUA even if the effectiveness comes in low as presumably it would still be better than nothing. However everything seen from the FDA during the whole pediatric vaccine development saga suggests that kind of flexibility considering the broader context should not be just assumed. Good thing children don't get COVID.

why would children under 5 need a vaccine when they could just get natures vaccine

I recall one of the early American colonists talking about how pristine and well tended the forests and fields were, after they moved in, when the Native population had been ravaged and decimated by diseases from Europe, forcing the abandonment of many settlements. The colonists considered it a gift from God, that the land seemed to have been made ready for their use, and what a blessing was the convenience of not needing to do years of tending to get it into shape.

But our lack of railroads and our crumbling infrastructure is unlikely to prove as much an easement to the new settlers' ways of life.

This is from dozens of pages back, but it drives me nuts to see this talking point. 99% of people will never learn the difference between masks. A cloth mask is a surgical mask is an N95 is a gaiter. It's insane to assume that people will get scared of seeing a white Aura when, to them, they just see a white paper-looking mask. They have no loving clue and never will, even with a bunch of online articles talking about N95s. We're giving too much intelligence to the common public over masks.

it's not a good faith argument. the real reason they wont let people wear better masks is because they don't want to pay for masks that work, and if someone brings their own mask then others may say "hey what's that, why are you using it? oh it's better? of the masks theyre giving us are useless? well let's ask them to give us functional ones"

It's reasonable to argue that an ineffective partial lockdown (in particular, one that suppresses transmission while maintaining Rt > 1) will select for variants that are best able to "burning through" whatever NPIs you have in place. It's a similar argument to why antibody evasion has evolved in response to widespread seroconversion.

right but then you've reduced the number of infected people with the lockdown anyway, and the number of mutations occurring in the total virus population. and if you select for variants that are good at burning through your NPIs, then those variants are good at that: burning through your NPIs, not necessarily more contagious in the absolute. and if they ARE more contagious, then they'd still have an advantage, NPIs or not, so they'd likely become dominant anyway

Shear Modulus posted:

if you guys really want to know the koch mouthpiece psycho mengele guy's insane logic it's that lockdowns lead to not everyone getting the virus, so the people who didn't get infected have weaker immune systems, so the virus can colonize them and have time to evolve because their non-natural-immunity-having bodies don't clear it out

ah. so entirely dependent on having a sufficiently long lasting period of natural immunity that the amount of infected people at any given time is less than it would be if we would be doing lockdowns + NPIs (and including whatever factor for "weakened immune systems" if that's even a thing). considering re-infections so far, i gotta say that plan ain't looking so good to me, all other considerations aside...
