Make sure to use Windower, really makes the game much more bearable. There's also some graphics mods you can do to make it look really good for an early-era mmo. A friend and I recently put about 100 hours in during covid, got through all the story and made it to middle end-game. There is something super solid and zen about the combat in it that really hooks me, despite being an action-combat fan. Another QOL thing is replacing the map image files with the fully annotated/revealed ones, makes life a lot easier.

I haven't logged into this in a while, I should play it more. Still got 30 Bard and then for some reason a second character that's a 15 Black Mage and I still have no idea what I'm doing but having fun doing it. RoE are pretty cool for getting gear though

Ah the memories of herding a party of 10-15 people around areas with monsters 30-40 levels higher with sneak/invis pots being rare, with the spell versions lasting not long at all and finding safety spots for the whm/rdm to reapply the spell to you. Also consider back in the day if FFXI was alt-tabbed/lost-focus it crashed/, we didn't have cell phones or second monitors so sitting there waiting for boats was definitely a more social experience for players. (we talked to each other lol)

Yeah I think there's some lost context that almost every game design decision in FFXI is oriented around socializing I kind of bounced off of ffxiv because you're never not pushing buttons, ffxi's combat (at least in the early days) is paced so you can continue having a conversation with your party members and I miss that so much

The problem with that, back in the day, was MP - even with a brd or a rdm, your mp refresh wouldn't be enough to support that kind of casting unless you're willing to rest for literally 5+ minutes waiting for it to refill.

BLM's job while leveling way back when was as a magic burst finisher. Staff swap to whatever elemental staff you were using to finish with, swap back to the mp regen one and kneel to get mp back. Repeat ad nauseum. Their burst was absolutely bonkers, at least.

Even the most active jobs (rdm, I'd argue, which was my first job) circa 2004-2005 still usually left plenty of bandwidth and downtime mid-combat unless things were hitting the fan

The most active job I can think of was, maybe, summoner? RDM had a bunch of spells but was still mostly keeping up En-* spells and magic bursting. Although they were generally good for helping with skill chains as well. Still very slow and plenty of time, especially compared to any modern mmo.

The below 60 parties I joined never coordinated skillchains or anything so I had no experience doing bursts. Once I got to 60 I found out the preferred party exp mob had reflect, so past that point I was supposed to solo level off of goblin pets in WOTG areas. It was extremely frustrating so I never got past 62 back then.

No idea how much it changed in later years but during the first few expansions you had to do coordinated skill chains and bursts to have any truly consistent leveling experience post, like, lv30. They also weren't that terribly hard with macros being a thing and that one plugin that showed everyone's gauge.

You can do 1 to 99 solo without ever doing Skill Chains or Spell Bursts. Sam and Dancer can self chain and some trusts can spell burst.

# ? Dec 24, 2021 06:19 |

At endgame you are using a weapon skill about every 2-5 seconds, it is very fun to self skillchain. The time when I finally finished my Twashtar on dancer, after all of the insane work and gil it cost, then finally went out to test it and was just doing 90k skillchains with trusts and chunking NMs down more than twice as fast as I used to, was one of my favorite MMO moments of all time and it was less than two years ago. It’s such a great RPG thing to have an insane grind actually payout with a meaningful power increase you will keep forever. Very few MMOs can achieve that these days. Yeah especially with dancer + twashtar, being able to drop two 99k WSs into a 99k SC fuckin owns hard. If you're quick enough you can get a third WS off into a second SC. Being able to drop nearly 500k in a few seconds, when you started plinking away for like 12 damage, is amazing.

Still sad about getting big grind weapons in OTHER mmos and having them outdated. I love my Yagrush. Some days I wanna come back and work on my Twash and Terps because DNC is amazing in this game.

Was watching someone with 160 viewers play FFXI last night; I wasn't aware Yoshi P was put in charge of basically all Square-Enix online division and therefore FFXI as well, and essentially saved the game from being scrapped + server's closed like eventually all MMOs. I do remember how the game did fall off with no news coming from it whatsoever for awhile, and I guess it was 2015? they put out a statement saying they weren't going to ever release anything new for it. But Yoshi, as someone who respects FFXI a lot (I mean the game was as big/bigger and more hardcore in Japan than it was un US, where it was huge ofc) and knows it can still make money, it's clearly had a resurgence with more new stuff coming. I like PvP MMOs with open RvR as my ideal experience, and I never reached past probably level 60 in FFXI, but I do love the game and look back fondly on it even with all the pain involved and the grind. I see that there is a private server for I guess the game as it was before level increase. I'd be curious to know what the population is on that server. In the stream at like 11PM EST last night there was 800 people on the guy's retail server and he said Asura is even more populated, and with what 20+ servers FFXI retail definitely has a healthy population in my opinion. I reset my password through Square last night just to see if I could get into my account, I guess it was the final day for free login though. I might actually log in some day though and see how much I want to play it.

So I don't think Yoshida had anything to do with it. Matsui's been in the Producer seat since 2012 and doing a good job with the little (no) money he has.

This interview does suggest Yoshi has had some influence regarding keeping FFXI alive / not allowing SE to shut it down. https://www.dualshockers.com/final-fantasy-xiv-interview-yoshida-soken/ quote:G: I’m guessing that Final Fantasy XI is drawing closer to the end of its life cycle. Are you thinking, when the time to close Final Fantasy XI comes, of ways to draw its remaining players into Final Fantasy XIV?

The interviewer makes a pretty big assumption with thinking FFXI is going to shut down soon. There are servers that are still pretty crowded. This MMO is very much still very alive.

Alive, refuses to die, who’s to say In any event it’s an excellent way to spend some time, a memory trip down a fun/accessible version of an unfun and legendarily inaccessible video game. It’s also, honestly, pretty dang fun. But only if you understand what the gently caress was going on back then. Trying to convince, like, a zoomer to check it out after playing FF14 or WoW or, gently caress, any video game would be an awful idea.

I said come in! posted:The interviewer makes a pretty big assumption with thinking FFXI is going to shut down soon. There are servers that are still pretty crowded. This MMO is very much still very alive. Facts but part of the reason I used that interview is due to Matsui FFXI director saying in 2015 it was basically going into maintenance mode/they weren't going to be creating any new content for the game anymore, at which point the community got pissed about it and clearly they did not go through with that plan, which is why I mentioned Yoshi P probably had a lot to do with 'saving' it (and of course the players themselves).

Retail FFXI is a living anthropological experience that provides you exponential levels of advancement over how things were, but if you engage the systems as they are, summon a few trusts and pull of a skill chain into a magic burst, you can start to see FFXI As She Was Designed.
