Is the base supposed to be the lamp's feet or was that a catastrophic anal prolapse?

Fuckin lamps with lovely dirt-concrete feet have been the bane of my existence for the past half year. OK loading up the truck, just lift up this stand-lamp, careful don't jostle it against anything or the base will—gently caress Now I have to vacuum all this crap out of the carpet on top of everything else

The weights inside the bases of these thing is that same dirt quality concrete and if you ever bump them wrong they shatter. Sometimes it all falls out at once, other times you end up with random bits of grey dirt over your desk for weeks with no idea where it's coming from.

Living in Oregon rules because we don't pump our own gas and there is no incentive to have yelling screens at the pump.

If you press one of the buttons it shuts those bastards up while you pump. Usually second from the bottom on the right. It’s worked for me every time for Shell stations.

Oregon's gas pumping law is a public health initiative to eliminate two semi-weekly minutes of gasoline vapor fume exposure for hundreds of drivers without proper PPE and instead concentrate all those exposures on a single person who is also not wearing PPE.

Are US petrol stations just constantly flooded with petrol or something? If your petrol station smells like fumes that means there's something wrong, surely?

Unironically, one of my favorite smells as a kid (late 80s, early 90s) was car exhaust. I think that unleaded just started being introduced at the time. *also spits out a ball of lead*

The phaseout of leaded gas in the States started in the mid 70s, with a two-pronged approach from the EPA. First, they mandated the reduction of lead in gasoline at all, and second, other emissions regulations pretty much forced manufacturers to start installing catalytic converters on new vehicles, which would have been disabled by lead in the exhaust anyway. I do remember leaded gas being available at pumps in Canada in the 80s, though they basically disappeared by the 90s. We're essentially the same market so not surprising.

So do they actually all stink of petrol? Like yeah you might catch a whiff of it here, but they usually don't smell of it other than the moment when you take the hose out of your tank.
