And if you love bumpers and hate money, check out Marc Karzen's anniversary collection of photos he shot for Dave's show from 1982-1993: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YiNbNEr_9IE Words courtesy of the legendary Don Giller: quote:I've uploaded this Sampler to help promote Late Night Staff Photographer Marc Karzen's just-released book on his remarkably unique -- and award-winning -- bumpers collection. These photos were incorporated into every ad break on the show for ten years, beginning with the very first Late Night on February 1, 1982. As both a Dave fan and a photography enthusiast I am working to convince myself to find, part with $70 for a 72-page 8.5x10" book. (Why couldn't he have made it a proper coffee table book )

I was thinking how the show has changed. Remember when Colbert did the cold opens himself, and he had a running gag about being late?code:
Bonus: Have this lovely clip I dug up while looking for that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5LePi6UrBCU And wow am I so glad this bit appears permanently retired. And the Midnight Confessions bit too I suppose, though I didn't hate that nearly as much as BFH. More just annoyed that they did it so damned often. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8zQpT1hMaw Oh poo poo I remember these. I will never forgive Stephen for wussing out and not giving us the final installment, presumably because he was after Trump won. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnowpe7Scro https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2ItRX2knQw Happy Stephen from the Before-Before Times. Scrolling through the Colbert LSSC YT channel... man, I remember saving all these web-only bonus bits meticulously, cataloguing them in folders with HD copies of the show, organized by every ~100 episodes (which typically is a neat six-month period.) Then in 2019 that HDD crashed (literally, to the floor) and instantly wiped out ~4 years of work. You can't save everything

The writing was good, but god it was very painful at times My problem with "making the show tighter," when it comes to late night, is that almost always means, "trimming the band out of the show and shortening the opening credits." I'm old school and appreciate leisurely opening titles in late night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKaW1AVIou8 Colbert's initial intro was so good, and as soon as they brought that prick in, they were getting hosed with. CNN deserves him, even more than they deserved Jeff Zucker. Also, Kimmel arguably has the best show in late night right now, but his opening titles have been steadily decimated over the years.

i temember he used to do Rockettes-style high kicks for the intro theme when he came out because my mom would laugh about his "fat little legs flailing about" and that stopped early on too the big furry hat bit peaked when he did it with Cleese, who seemed to have a blast doing it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwH04FeeVlQ the running up the stairs might be somewhat fraught as well, it just reminds me of Conan taking a spill and just banging his dome off the floor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q_NOYOgf7k

Seth is fine but it is such a safe, boring show. At 12:30 I am expecting some weird, out there, on the edge comedy. Letterman and Conan did that. Fallon was at least pushing the boundaries of weird at that time. As edgy Seth may have ever gotten was a talking Sea Captain Painting.

Steve Vader posted:Today I'm enjoying the memory of this thread coining the term "The Jay Leno No-Laugh Hour." I posted the phrase, "The Jay Leno No-Laugh Hour" in this thread. I did not, however, coin it; that honour belongs to Raji Alowairdi, one of the program directors I worked with many years ago for a brief time. While all the directors were good professional folk, Raj was the most fun. Back during the ten minutes I worked at that NBC station (WEAU in Eau Claire, WI,) I was an MCO—Master Control Operator. This sounds more prestigious than it is. It's the bottom rung of the ladder, though I loved it. I especially loved overnights, full run of the place to watch Conan and SNL and listen the band's music on Leno (he may have been poo poo, but Eubanks led a mean crew.) Before the late night shenanigans, however, was the 10pm newscast. While the primary tech crew for newscasts was in the other room called sub control (graphics, sound, director,) the job of running tapes was on the MCO. At the time, all the pretaped portions of the newscast were each on their own DVCPRO tape, neatly organized in a little plastic basket. I was given a rundown sheet for the newscast, annotated with what tapes play when, and I had to juggle them on three VTR decks. Pop tape in, cue it for the director, remove after playback, repeat. At the end of the rundown, 10:34:30 is marked as the return to network feed. Usually this is as dry as it sounds. One night, however, looking over the rundown, I see written code:
I've been meaning to write this up for six weeks! Edit: Another shot of Raj "racing" to get the rundown. While I doubt I still have the rundown in question, that's what one looks like. Fun pwn fucked around with this message at 10:04 on Mar 1, 2022 |
