Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne. Everything great about the first game seems as good or better this time around, with higher production values that make the whole thing feel slicker. My only real complaint is that the escort missions were pretty bad but there’s only two of them and neither are particularly long and at least they weren’t the blood-trail dream sequences from 1. The action is fun, intense, and fast-paced, the story and atmosphere is a great noir pastiche, and Max is a really interesting protagonist. This was the only one in the series I hadn’t already played at some point in the past and is probably my favorite of the 3

Heyyy, nice! I should really replay MP2 - as you said, it's a fun game! It'd have to be my favourite too, although that might just be the nostalgia talking, since MP3 wasn't bad either.

its basically a literal superpower now cause the more kills you get while in bullet time, the bar gets a lil extra charge AND max moves faster.

I think if you're a huge FFXIV lorehead who is really invested in the story/characters this has to be an amazing experience, but it really dragged for me. The last 5% (basically from the last dungeon til the credits) is insanely ownage though, reminded me of the best Yakuza ending sequences in terms of how hot blooded and excited I got. Looking forward to getting really into raiding for a few weeks then abandoning the game to play other stuff.

when i read this post at the time i stopped reading at 5% in case of spoilers and thought you were saying the last 5% really dragged. i was wondering wtf you were talking about when i got there. still dumb that you thought the rest of it dragged but not as dumb as i had thought.

1. Spyro: A Hero's Tail (100%). Fairly deece europlatformer, way more competent than Spyro 4 which tbf, wasnt actually a finished game. All the minigames suck complete rear end, they couldnt even do halfway decent versions of the flying only obstacle courses. but the actual levels were expansive and pretty, gems dropped by enemies respawn so you dont need to sweat tracking down two missing gems out of 700 or w/e. closer to a sm64 style game with just getting Light Gems and Dragon Eggs. i quite liked it. on to 6.

Yeah, I really like a Hero's Tail. You going to play the New Beginning trilogy next or try out the handheld games on GBA and DS? The New Beginning stuff is way different than normal Spyro while the handheld GBA ones are like the previous ones.

I'd start posting my own games beaten this year, but my motherboard died halfway through Hollow Knight and need to get a new computer.

Colorado sucks the first time you're trying to beat it. It's kinda fun when you're going back and doing the optional challenges and stuff, but it's definitely a quicksave fest the first time.

Do you have Hitman 2? Since if you play Colorado in that version, they added a load of bushes you can hide in IIRC, which weren't in Hitman 1/2016.
Either way though, congrats! Just in time for Hitman 3 to come out on Steam :D

totally fine game. dictionary definition of acceptable. first rpg on the game boy and it shows. very basic but has some weird systems but also they're not weird in a way that's challenging or even requires you to know exactly how they work. more of a historical curiosity than anything you gotta play. also even when you know it's coming thanks to decades of being on the internet, killing god with a chainsaw at the end is still pretty cool.

anyway, the year of SaGa begins

I would try them randomly every now and then over the years, and early this year i completed one of them, but the final one, from the HALF PLANTED world, has stumped me over and over no matter how many times ive tried. today i finally, *finally*, got this motherfucker done.

1. Returnal (True ending): I got this in May last year and liked the gameplay and story set-up quite a bit but I found it pretty hard and the inability to suspend runs made me eventually peter out playing it because I'd always think it wouldn't be worth starting a run when I only had time for a short session. Then the big 2.0 patch came out adding in the suspend feature so I played this over most of Christmas. I really liked the kind of bullet hell gameplay for a 3D shooter and the movement and combat felt super fluid and nice to manoeuvre around with. The upgrades that let you access new areas also for the most part would have a significant effect on combat too which is nice rather than just effectively being no different than picking up keys. I like all of the weapons mostly and thought the trait system ended up making different varities of weapons feel pretty different.

I thought the story was really good and really liked how embedded it was in the gameplay loop, especially between act 1 and 2. The ending was super ambiguous as was the additional stuff in the true ending which I thought was great. I was glad it ultimately didn't try and explain itself too much. It reminded me a lot of annihilation of someone coming into contact with a totally alien world and entity and it just completely eroding and stripping their sense of reality or maybe pushing it way past what humans are capable of understanding.

Pretty good.

e: also Seasons Don't fear the Reaper in biome 4 was amazing

Probably the most stressful character in a while. I basically never felt safe until right up at the end when I found some insanely sick plate mail. Star Voyager
this game is basically entirely about figuring out what all the different things in the HUD and menu mean. there are kind of three different parts to gameplay, and i am only going to describe one of them, because look at how many words it takes!

you start off with a random map - you are in one corner, near your home base, and there are enemy ships in the other corner. there are also a handful of space stations (you can use these to refuel) and 9 planets. 2 of those planets have powerups on them (as far as i can tell, one increases your speed and one makes your attack better). your goal is to kill every enemy ship before any reach your base.

the top screenshot is normal gameplay and the bottom one is the map. the right side is your current fuel reservoir. when it runs out, one of the dots on the top right will delete (in the screenshot, i'm running low on fuel). if you run out of fuel, you lose. you can refuel at home base or another space station. in order to move to a new location on the map, you have to:

1) go into the map screen and move your cursor. your cursor is the tiny orange dot. you are the square.
2) out of the map, hold the B button until the meter on the left fills almost all the way up, then let go.
3) the top left meter will start to fill with dots. this is a timed mini-game: once it starts, you have to hold B until there are exactly as many dots as the number in the middle bottom of the screen, then let go. there's a bit of a delay so getting the timing down takes a little practice.
4) you will go into hyperspace! while in hyperspace, the little map in the lower left part of the screen will jostle around and you have to keep your destination centered using the D-pad or you will end up in the wrong location.

all of this is just to move from one place on the map to another.

once you reach your location, there are entirely different sets of rules for finding whatever is in that part of the map (planet, space station, enemy ships) and then entirely different rules for combat. if you can destroy all the enemy ships, all you have to do is go back to home base, at which point the game congratulates you on a job well done and runs the credits.

it's ambitious and weird, but at the end of the day, it isn't very good. once i figured out what i was doing, i was mostly okay with it, but those kinds of controls continue into combat, making it, ultimately, pretty unplayable. it feels sort of like the kind of board game where you spend a half an hour reading the instructions, a half an hour arguing about the rules, and ultimately discover that what you played was mediocre anyway.

next up: konami's Stinger.
