Hmmm yes, a doctor whose sole purpose is to treat people for disease and injury, who has a very expensive education and years of experience beyond that? let’s not only deploy him, let’s put him somewhere a bullet might find him! My first assignment in my tour at Jacksonville Naval Hospital was in the Urology clinic, run by an old-rear end O-6 who was widely recognized as one of the best in the region - like, he would occasionally fly down to Miami on weekends to consult with the civvie hospital there. I'm pretty sure the closest thing he had to combat experience was when he got mad at the OBGYN who kept nicking bladders in the O/R and roughed him up a bit. Stellar guy, though.

I was friends with a group of newly-minted Army dentists in ~2007 ish. Lots of extremely silly Army stories out of them. I'm sure I've shared some before. They were going to send them to a 16 week training thing to train them to eventually deploy and be combat medics. Surge is on, my dudes, and you dentists know how to wash your hands and deal with blood, sounds perfect. Fortunately, either the need subsided or someone in command made a good decision, because they didn't end up going. It's technically part of their jobs for emergency use, but sending a bunch of O-3+ dentists the Army already spent a ton of money to educate into a combat zone to do a new job poorly seems like a last resort thing. The post they were assigned to did basic training. They encountered a LOT of boots from poverty backgrounds who had never been to a dentist before in their lives.  Their unit also had some sort of leftover budget that was use or lose by the end of the year, so in December they ordered thousands of dollars in paintball gear for "training purposes". It's not FWA if an officer does it!
