Pain olympics was definitely the peak of my edgy teen belief that desensitizing myself to the horrors of the world would make me an adult. I mean I guess it worked and I turned out fine because I'm not actually desensitized to injustice but I can't really say the same for a lot of people who did the same thing. Come to think of it, I wonder who the hell was uploading pictures of all these medical horrors.

I will look anything on the Internet except for actual real torture and death. I had a narrow miss with Daniel Pearl, but the thing that sealed the deal was when a high school boyfriend showed me a night vision clip from Afghanistan towards the start of the Forever War. This rule has served me well, as now I know most of the classic grossouts with only minimal long-term scarring. The only exception I’ve made was the body cam footage from when the cops murdered a 13 year old in my city last summer, because it felt wrong that I got to just go tsk tsk at the police without fully acknowledging the depravityof their actions. It was awful and I’m tearing up just thinking about it, but I’m glad I never desensitized myself to the horrors of human violence the way I did to the horrors of the human body.

I've been an insurance adjuster for the better part of forty years, including stints as a casualty/litigation rep, which involved seeing many pictures of people after they die, including the police AID photos that the public will never see. As a property rep, I have seen, personally, the aftermath of murder and suicide and unattended death in the years before trauma clean-up companies existed. But that one video haunts me to this day.

I've also seen the russian beheading thing but the stuff that came out of Syria was like 100x worse. ISIS, no joke, found entertainment in coming up with ways to execute people. And in this modern age they of course filmed all of it and posted it online You ever wanted to see a group of 10 year olds cut prisoners heads off? No? People burning alive in steel cages? No? Good, then never look it up A lot of the ISIS brutal video stuff was posted here on SA in a thread and it was shocking how long a lot of the most grotesque videos stayed up on Youtube

Yeah, no, I'll be glad when the thread finally moves on because I avoid the shock death and mutilation stuff as much as I can because I have a hard time watching poo poo I know is fake without some kind of sympathy pain. Like, I'm working my way through Always Sunny on Hulu and got to the episode in Season 13 where Charlie did a Home Alone thing in the bar by himself and felt physically ill with all the poo poo around the bear trap that was stuck on his leg. It's why I don't watch torture porn horror movies (it's the facial expressions/sounds of pain/etc. that do it). The finale episode for Season 13 with that dance Mac did was a surprisingly good/well done thing for this show about horrible people doing horrible things to themselves/others. Just an FYI; Rob, Charlie and Glenn have started a podcast which is ostensibly a Sunny rewatch from the beginning but it really is more just the three of them screwing around for 30-40 minutes every week. There's still a lot of behind the scenes talk and how they got started in the business. There are also times when they spend the entire episode talking about parking spaces and one where Rob talks about almost getting into a fight at an In-n-out.
