this shall be humorous
There was a number of Kalmyk Buddhists in Yugoslavia, refugees from the Russian Civil War, most of them having fled from the horrors of it. There was even a Buddhist temple in Belgrade.

The "most of them" part leaves out the, uh, "prosperous individuals" in the community. These self-appointed leaders include, but are not limited to, a Russian White Army officer, a Don Cossack Ataman, some mostly Paris dwelling "spiritual leader in exile" and some princess who asked fascist Japan to get them a new statue of Buddha.

When the war started, first they got hosed by our fascists for being un-Serbian, then by the Nazis themselves for being, well, the same people as the ones the Nazis were murdering a lot of in the Soviet Union. Conveniently, the glorious community leaders weren't harmed for some mysteroius reasons, and were able to eventually flee to USA via Germany unharmed and with most of their belongings, including everything the community contributed to the temple. Unfortunately for the few remaining survivors in Belgrade, communists weren't in the mood to sort out which way the swastika was pointing, and kicked them out as well.

do you think the fact that it literally began on a rumor mill chain that involved 'the blacks are coming here to rape and murder our women' and much of the 'free speech' poo poo that came up after was in the context of 'why would you stop us from barging into random African transfer student dorms and demanding they leave school, I thought this was a free country' perhaps speaks to the underlying beliefs of these protests?

people will protest for the sake of protesting. A friend of mine was in Minneapolis during the protests there for 2 weeks running around, fighting cops, etc, without knowing who George Floyd was.

I mean I don't think literally every person wanted 'make it okay to lynch Africans' to be 'the issue' but my point is more what exact demands should the government have listened to in the protests? The ones not based in 'we wanna chase Africans away from our schools' were all just vague 'more freedoms (to say we want to chase Africans away)' or tangible things that...sucked rear end like a removal of foreign student visas and all.

The idea that Russia "has to do something" is totally unfounded. The geography of Donbas funnels attacks from the west into what would be a massive killzone for Russian artillery. All they have to do is wait for Kiev to make the first move.

At this point they've already made NATO flinch by moving some military units around, which means they've won. Putin called our bluff.

what bluff? what call? what game are we playing? can’t Russia just have their military exercises in peace?

No.

Western media has been hyping up anticipation of a Russian invasion coming any day now, to justify this completely insane American-led policy of turning Ukraine into a gigantic Gladio state. If you see the way true believers talk about this online, they actually think that the west will substantially back Ukraine in the event of Russian invasion. What Russian exercises have demonstrated is that we absolutely will not. Russia could occupy the entire country and all Biden would do is implement more sanctions. It's a massive shift in rhetoric away from backing Ukraine no matter what to hedging our bets in the face of Russian power. It's humiliating to be shown that despite their posturing on Russia, western planners haven't actually done anything to counter Russian aggression except dump weapons and specialists into Ukraine.

So the fact is that Russia calls the shots in Ukraine. They can keep the country destabilized for as long as they want and there's nothing we can actually do about it. Russia can use conditions in Ukraine as leverage to have their national security and international relations interests respected. So now the ball is in our court whether we want to take Russia seriously and negotiate down the crisis, or if we want Ukraine to be a shithole forever.

The conditions are already favorable to Russia so nothing would change. It'd just remain a frozen conflict like it already is. Things are only going to change when we start taking Russia seriously instead of pretending the US is still a hyperpower that can do whatever it wants anywhere.

I got a hand vac that you can also put a tube on the back of to use as a blower and the thing is like a million times better than whatever black and decker crap I had before. It's got one of those gibberish names and the manual is clearly written by someone who sort of knows English and I couldn't give a single gently caress because of how good it is.

I'm helping!

The Tiananmen Square protesters were a mix of "the economy sucks, we want to lynch immigrants", "the economy sucks, we want to return to Marxist principles" and "the economy sucks, we should become a capitalist country." Obviously, it's the latter category that got signal boosted and supported by the Americans. Comparing China's development since then to Russia, it would have been a disaster if the protesters got what they wanted. However, I think the city authorities and Deng Xiaoping made a mistake telling troops to reach the square using lethal force if necessary. The earliest eyewitness accounts say that the PLA fired the first shots on protesters, and at that point many troops left their vehicles and refused to continue advancing. That's when protesters started burning military vehicles and killing loyalist troops, and then after the army got organized it started marching down Chang'an Avenue shooting people who resisted. The official government account says that the blood of any innocent people who died is on the hands of the protesters, but I wonder if the riot troops could have cleared the protesters without needing gunfire. There were major protests in other cities that didn't end the same way.
