omfg star trek picard is so loving dumb and bad.

i'm trying to get through it, again, and am up to episode 4 where they introduce the romulan warrior nuns who practice "the way of absolute candor" where they have "total communication of emotion, without any filter between thought and word"

because, see, the romulans are, like, vulcans, but the exact opposite in every way. not an insular offshoot of vulcans who developed their own unique culture over centuries of isolation. just bizarro vulcans

also, i love patrick stewart, but it's really apparent that he's old as balls and sometimes seems to have trouble delivering his lines.

and instead of building a set for his quarters on the starship, they just put him back in the french chateau set and said it's a holographic recreation of his home on earth. wtf. (1) nobody else on the ship has a holographic room, and (2) i don't even know whether to blame that on the show being cheap or patrick steward being old as balls and needing to sit in an easy chair whenever possible.

the only part i've actually liked so far is that they brought back Hugh, portrayed by the original actor, and he's now a federation citizen and borg researcher/psychologist/something. that's a nice touch.

i literally don't even know the names of half the crew on this ship. there's picard, DOCTOR JURATI, captain beardo and his holographic j/o bros, and desert hippie. gently caress

he apparently hasn't done stage work since 2016 so that probably indicates hes got approximately zero energy. i saw him in waiting for godot in like 2014 and he definitely still had a ton of energy then. thats only 2 hours though, a shooting day for a tv set is far longer. when did picard start production?

as an aside, we waited at the exit to see if we could get our programs autographed. my sister in law however brought a picard figure in box. stewart was signing programs, got to where she was going to be close to next, looked her right in the eye and turned around to sign programs on the other side. better story than him signing it imo.

my cynical read on that is that one of the producers was just absolutely batshit in love with the chateau sets and wanted any excuse at all to revisit them again and again

i suspect that it's probably actually more down to something like the chateau set cost a bundle of money and the studio refused to authorize that amount of money for something that would only show up in two or three episodes.

it's absolutely loving dumb though. picard doesn't need to bring "the comforts of home" with him, he lived in space for literally decades, he was a career starfleet officer. like, if anything, if they'd wanted to do the "picard needs somewhere familiar to hang out and center himself in" it would have made more sense to do... the ready room.

but i'm sure some dipshit producer would have been all "b-bb-b-but it's too cramped! it looks old. can't do it. *huff*"

so we get the goddamn vineyard parlor.

the ST Experience set was distinct from the actual television set because it had state-mandated lit up emergency 'EXIT' signs and doors integrated into the walls

yeah it was a perfect replica of the bridge except for the state-mandated safety features

vegas takes building safety real seriously, after a series of deadly 1970s and 1980s fires swept through casinos that were built by mob firms and had mob-owned public officials signing off on their safety

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGM_Grand_fire - 85 dead in 1980 blaze, led to sweeping building code changes like requiring exotic technologies like 'sprinklers' in places where hundreds of people were staying

maybe he visits rikers so he can get pizza.

most everyone kinda gets a pass on things that would otherwise be the end of their career/time on the show. riker gets turbo mind-hosed in that one episode where he's in an alien prison. data goes nuts multiple times and hijacks the ship/assaults the crew/defects to his evil brother. geordi gets brainwashed by the romulans into being an unwitting assassin and troi says it'll take "a long time" to unfuck his head. worf beams over to a klingon ship and kills the captain, then later that season just up and quits starfleet to go fight in a klingon war. dr. crusher disobeys orders and violates ferengi taboos and steals a shuttlecraft because something doesn't add up.

and tbh i'm fine with that. part of the appeal of the show is we get to see familiar characters deal with wild poo poo. the alternative is poo poo like dr. who where most of the stories are about some dumbass guest characters i can never give a poo poo about, or maybe about the companions who will be gone in a couple years anyway.

i was gonna say exactly this, yeah. that one has a few too many bleeps and bloops for me, but cut those down and emphasize the warp core noise and i'd run it 24 hours a day

polyester concept posted:

yeah at the very least it would have been massive loving culture shock. does he even remember how to run the ship, something he quit doing a literal lifetime ago? is he going to remember everyone's names? shouldn't his personality be suddenly completely different?

then again this is the same show where troi was raped by an alien energy being, gestated and gave birth to an alien baby over the course of three days, then saw him grow up and evaporate in a week, and at the end of it everyone is like "let's never speak of this again."

like they're all in the ready room talking about whether troi should get an abortion and she's just sitting in the corner with her arms crossed getting no input. lol

picard not only became a borg drone but openly admitted 'i remember everything' and as far as i can tell starfleet just said "You feelin aight? Take a week off?" and gave his command right the gently caress back not even being sure what happens when a starfleet captain, specifically the one with the biggest ship, becomes a borg, then immediately becomes a not borg
