iram omni possibili modo preme:
plus una illa te diffamabit, quam multæ virtutes commendabunt

i once looked into adding vault to our infra, to replace the hacky 'gitlab secrets -> printenv -> scp -> rm' way our ci/cd handled secrets

the admittedly excellent documentation explained that to in order to unseal a vault ('start a server'), you are supposed to gather three of the five mystical shards ('passwords') in which you split the master key, which you will have given to five chosen employees presumably tattooed with the sacred hashi glyph on their forehead

the documentation helpfully pointed out that you could easily configure a less secure number of shards, if you had such unusual requirements as 'fewer than five ops guys in the company', but by that point i had sort of figured out i was not the target user

fake edit: a few months later mitchell mihashimoto showed up in a hn thread about a vault release, one of the top comments was something along the lines of 'hashicorp keeps adding byzantine enterprise features to the product, i wish they would make it simpler to use for non-billion-dollar companies', hashimoto replied with frankly laudable candidness 'i feel ya dude, but billion dollar companies are what pay our bills so that's what we focus on. consider that vault may probably be overkill for your needs anyway'

also iirc he uses nixos as a daily driver so you know his perception of complexity might be a little skewed
