Yeah actually. It's in reasonably good nick by the looks. I got some new strings at the local music shop because it'll inevitably need them. Picked up a lead, some picks (I used to use Dava picks but just grabbed some Dunlop 0.73's which are what I started with), and a tuner as well (Mrs Spergo owns an acoustic so it'll be handy).

Only Les Paul in that price range ;)

It's a fun starter guitar, but they do feel kinda cheap. Find yourself a Metal Zone if you wanna just make big horrid metal noises, they have a bad rep from purists but they're versatile as gently caress and just a good one to have in the arsenal.
Also for a bit more bite, try harder pics, .73s are good for acoustic cos they have give and will brush along strings for a nice acoustic sound, but if you want attack, go with something a little harder.
I use Dunlop Tortex .86 or 1mm, the .86s are preferred simply because they are bright green and are hard to lose sight of (I think the .73s are bright yellow which is good) and the 1mm are blue.

I stopped using black pics ages ago cos they ALWAYS went missing and became invisible.

Grandson turns 1 today and I've barely seen him since he was born. I have to keep reminding myself that I have friends with grandchildren in WA who they've yet to meet.

Similar, but for different reasons

I'm "expected" to go to my nephew's christening next weekend, I'm not going

I didn't learn they were born untill a week later via my partner's Instagram

"hey Jestery, your sister had their baby" "oh word"

I was quite literally the last person to find out.

I didn't learn their name untill a month later

Learnt the sex 6 months later

Seen the baby maybe twice - three times?

We aren't even Catholic?

To be blunt, I've not been included in the life of this little person, I just have no connection to them and would rather poo poo in my hands and clap than spend a a day preparing to spend hour in a church listening to so old white dude drone on for an hour and dunk a baby

It sucks, but on the only metrics I have, I'm closer to some coworker's children than to my blood nephew

I'd say it sucks, but I haven't lost anything it's just a mode of existence

Yeah, the lack of contact in my case is purely covid related. I had a great deal of contact with his almost 4 year old sister until covid came along, but it's been very sporadic since early 2020 (me being medically vulnerable has also played into this).

At least grandson is too young to remember that there was no big gathering for his first birthday. Hopefully by the time he's old enough to remember, it will be safer for people to gather in significant numbers.

I'm estranged from my brothers and things are tense between my eldest daughter and my son so I totally get it.

Yeah I'm happy to just use a lower end one for now then invest in something a bit better (i.e. an actual Gibson) when I've got my skill back to where it used to be. My goal for the next month is to be able to play lead on Apache by the Shadows (which I used to be able to play from memory), and also a bunch of the Metallica songs I used to have a reasonable go at playing (for whom the Bell tolls)

Also there's newer songs I want to play as well so I guess it's a good starting point

I used to use the red tip and yellow tip Dava picks which are good because they're meaty as in the hand and have a good grip. I used to also have a bass and so they were usable on both

Word up. They're the only picks I could keep hold of on stage when I started sweating.

When I was gigging I'd wear the points off pretty quick. Just turn it to the next point and play on.

Still have a couple out of the 30 pack I bought 10 years ago.

They have a pretty versatile EQ setup and can sound pretty good if they're not set to babbies first ultra scooped metal tone. People like plugging directly into the effects return and using them as a preamp.

I did that preamp thing with my sansamp VT Bass Pedal. Now it's on a board I just run into the input with the rest of the chain but it was a good way to get a decent and consistent tone when renting one of the 5 random amps at the studio.

I also spent $1500 on a Markbass amp w/ tube preamp only to entirely bypass it as mentioned above.

I broke a long streak of not giving a mediocre poo about Hottest 100 purely because of Tom Cardy. My votes were for HYCYBH, every Amyl and the Sniffers song, and some Tyler the Creator stuff. I now go back to being a dinosaur and not giving a poo poo about the hottest 100 thanks for your time.

I'm in a similar position, sorry to hear that things are rough there. I've found that making sure my kid understands that family absolutely can be people who we choose has helped. It's also been helpful for me to keep this idea in my mind and surround myself with good people when we're able to.
