What do they even do with the Constitution? I hope they at least get to go out and fire some broadsides even if just at the ocean.

It's basically a museum ship (and there's an actual museum associated with it too), they do tours and a lot of PR/ceremonial stuff. They did a big restoration on it a while back so it is actually able to go sail around now, but it's not something they do routinely.

I'm sure every Captain daydreams about taking it out to hunt pirates.

Does the command have actual other sailboats or a ship to actually practice rigging and sailing? Or would that make it too much of a “fun” assignment for the USN.

If you're in Boston it's worth seeing the Constitution and the WWII destroyer museum ship next to it. You get a lot of access especially to the destroyer so it's a pretty cool visit and it's not at all inconvenient to get to if you're already downtown.

My guess is that his previous restrained stance and new more overt deterrent posture is related to how negotiations with NATO allies regarding how unified the alliance will be.

My read on this is that Biden doesn't want to bluff. The oddly ambiguous "minor incursion" statements from the presser were to make it clear to Ukraine that they shouldn't bet on backup unless poo poo goes real serious, so they shouldn't get overly confident. I also assume that most of the European allies behind the scenes weren't ready to commit to anything. Now they probably are so he can be bolder. A lot of this probably goes back to Obama's "red line" in Syria where he thought the UK was backing us up.

It's absolutely underrated, probably because unlike Top Gun, it's striving for historical accuracy. I wish it had spawned a rich series of sequels and spinoffs.

Crab Dad posted:

At a guess, probably the "lash" part.

Also, Herman Melville has some great descriptions of life during that time:

quote:

When you have the requisite room, you always have "spreaders" in
your hammock; that is, two horizontal sticks, one at each end,
which serve to keep the sides apart, and create a wide vacancy
between, wherein you can turn over and over--lay on this side or
that; on your back, if you please; stretch out your legs; in short,
take your ease in your hammock; for of all inns, your bed is the best.

But when, with five hundred other hammocks, yours is crowded and
jammed on all sides, on a frigate berth-deck; the third from
above, when "_spreaders_" are prohibited by an express edict from
the Captain's cabin; and every man about you is jealously
watchful of the rights and privileges of his own proper hammock,
as settled by law and usage; _then_ your hammock is your Bastile
and canvas jug; into which, or out of which, it is very hard to
get; and where sleep is but a mockery and a name.

Eighteen inches a man is all they allow you; eighteen inches in
width; in _that_ you must swing. Dreadful! they give you more
swing than that at the gallows.

During warm nights in the Tropics, your hammock is as a stew-pan;
where you stew and stew, till you can almost hear yourself hiss.
Vain are all stratagems to widen your accommodations. Let them
catch you insinuating your boots or other articles in the head of
your hammock, by way of a "spreader." Near and far, the whole
rank and file of the row to which you belong feel the encroachment
in an instant, and are clamorous till the guilty one is found out,
and his pallet brought back to its bearings.

A hammock with spreader bars is simply divine and I’ve spent a fair number of nights in one of mine (hammock camping is A Thing for me.) but everything about hammocking on a ship sounds super lovely. I was rewatching The Terror last night and they had a shot of some sailors in hammocks that were bent into a U and it made my back instantly ache.
